Dear Uncle Rom, I loved you dearly from when I was a little girl. Lucky for me, in the last ten years we became best friends. I cherish every moment that we spent together, and I want you to know that your wonderful stories and humor are deep in my heart. You once advised me to “live my life.” In your honor, I want you to know that I’m going to give it all I’ve got!

Deaqr Claudia,
I am exactly 10 years younger than your father, my uncle Romolo. When I was a kid we lived close by and I idolized him - followed him everywhere. When he served in the army during WWII I wrote to him. When the war was over he and I joined a gym in Maspeth. (It was housed in a 3-car garage and run by a war time friend of your father.) The only reason they let a 12-year old kid join was because of your father.
He was a great guy, very funny and I will never forget him.
Please accept my heart-felt sympathy.
Sonny

Rest in peace, Mr. Grappone. Though you will be missed by those who love you, your eternal life begins in your new Home, in your new body! 'The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body...Just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the Man from heaven!' 1Corinthians 15. We'll see you again!

Romolo, I love you and I miss you. In my memory, you will always be the same hardy young guy who worked out in his grandfather's garage, who was a "Maspeth Strong Man" and took on all comers, the same kid who rode 50 miles on his bike out onto Long Island just for the hell of it. The Tank Destroyer(!) in World War II who lived through the Battle of the Bulge and kicked Rommel's a** despite frozen feet that had to thaw out under the stove. Your niece Letty and I may be the last people who hoisted a glass of wine with you and told stories of the old days, and the not-so-old days too. You will always be a legend with us for saying, at the end of a Thanksgiving fish dinner that almost caught the stove on fire, "What made you think I liked fish?" You're a helluva guy, Rommie. God bless you. Rest, finally, in peace.
