I was an RN working at St Francis hospital and had the honor of working with Dr. Ewing. My first interaction with him as a young graduate was one of feeling mildly intimidated and at the same time in awe of the man.We worked together over the years, (approx. 10-12) together in caring for patients in the respiratory intensive care unit, He became my mentor and source of much education- he treated me like a peer in many ways and collaborated about his patients. He had extremely high standards which he held everybody to- as it should be in caring for patients. He became my mom's internist and she absolutely loved him. She was ,(and sitill is sassy) and so was he- they were the perfect match.! I have so many fond memories and feel blessed to have had this man in my and my family's life. He often spoke of his son and family with great pride and admiration. May he and his family find peace. - My thoughts and prayers- Laurie Haefele, ARNP

Tony was a unique person. It is very difficult to express in words the magnitude of his personality and his dedication to all he encountered. He embodied the best of the human spirit. Knowledgeable, intuitive, caring, sensitive...a gentle giant with a heart of gold.
I have known Tony for almost 50 years and when I first met him, I instinctively knew that this man was like no other. Tony could be gruff, grumpy, excitable and impatient but he was REAL!!
I will miss and love him always. Such an incredible human being. Simply irreplaceable.
Love,

An irreplaceable, amazing man. Every remembrance, thought and sentiment in all the condolences printed here ring incredibly true. He was my doctor for many years as I grew up in Port Washington, but more importantly, my mother is alive today due to his amazing care. The Shapiro family sends its heartfelt condolences to the Ewing family. Rest in peace Dr. Ewing.

Was away and heartbroken to learn of Dr Ewings passing. He was such a beautiful person with the twinkle in his eye and quick wit. I love that gravely voice & big smile. His impeccable sense of dress with his smooth jackets. He never passed me without asking about my son (they both loved soccer). He talked with such love and pride about his son and niece from California and nephew. I am very sad that I wouldn't see him coming down the hall but after all his hard years that he never once complained about (even during the new computers), I truly hope he is enjoying a drink and fishing somewhere. It was truly my pleasure to know him. My thoughts & prayers are with you all.

I was away on vacation when I heard the news about Dr. Ewing. He was my doctor for over 20 years, more like 30. I truly loved the man - he was honest and told you exactly like it is. He saved my health and my husbands more than once. His nickname for me was "Moses" and he loved to tease me about my trips and commute to Manhattan. I will miss you forever.

Dr. Ewing embodied so much of what is noble in the human spirit that anything that I write seems inadequate. Losing him is as painful as losing a family member.
In 1980, while hospitalized at St. Francis with symptoms that baffled my own doctor, Dr. Ewing visited me covering for my doctor who was unavailable. Within minutes of examining me, he made a diagnosis, started a treatment protocol and had me home in a few days. And for the next 34 years I was blessed to have him as my doctor.
And I will always be grateful for his care of my Mom. He was wonderful to her and she loved him dearly. When she was hospitalized for nearly a month, he visited her every day; he brought her through a tough period and gave us the gift of her presence for years after.
Appointments with Dr. Ewing were wonderful experiences because they transcended the patient/doctor relationship. I got to know him as a person. I cherish the conversations we had about all sorts of topics, especially the ones about the meals he prepared and the wines he enjoyed.
I came to know him as a compassionate, erudite, generous, courageous, and endearingly irascible man. He was genuine and true to himself - a man of exceptional integrity. That is his legacy.
Knowing him was a privilege; being his patient was a blessing.

Dear Mrs. Ewing and P.K.,
Dr. Ewing is a rare gem with a heart of gold. I can't even wrap my brain around the fact that he is gone. My heart celebrates his life and I joyfully remember BBQ's and Holiday Dinners at your house since I was a kid. Your family has been very special to our family for almost 50 years and Dr. Ewing was not only our family doctor but my father's BEST friend. May Dr. Ewing's passionate legacy embrace P.K. and may God's comfort surround you now and forever. Now it's time for God to take care of Dr. Ewing's heart . I will say, see you in heaven Dr. Ewing with the nick name that only he had for me. xxooxoxo

I got to know Dr. Kenneth Ewing 20 years ago, when I had a life/death heart condition and had been incorrectly diagnosed for diabetes. Through a mutual friend (Dr. Rolando Moreno), we got to talk, and even though I did not had the economic means, Dr. Ewing and his family arranged everything so I could get the heart operation. Just knowing Dr. Ewing and his family has been one of the greatest blessings in a lifetime that one could have. To say it's an honor to have known the exceptional and special person he was with the humbleness, honesty, morality, ethics and professionalism stays short. Wherever he was, he lighted up the place, always happy, cheerful and caring without any interest. Our whole family will always be grateful and will always remember and have him in our hearts. Our prayers go to his family and him. We will never forget you Tony. - San Jose, Costa Rica

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ewing family. We grew up a few houses away from Dr. Ewing. He was our friend, confidant and doctor for the past 40 years. He was larger than life and his death is devastating. Dr. Ewing was an incredible doctor and human being. No matter what you needed his door was always open and he would spend whatever time was necessary so that you got the right answer. Ten years ago my sister and I were 2 days away from going on vacation when she called Dr. Ewing thinking she had indigestion. It turns out it was a potential life threatening heart issue and in his calm manner Dr. Ewing got her immediately to the hospital with all the proper care and saved her life, THANK YOU! He will always be in our hearts.

I worked for Dr. Ewing for 2 years. I could honestly say that in those 2 years I learned so much from a brilliant man. I'm going to miss everything about him. We grew so close over the years and he became in some way a father figure to me. He helped guide me through school and life. He was one of a kind! He was the most caring person that I've ever met! He spoke his mind and I seriously adored that about him! He always kept me laughing, from things he'd say to people to nick naming me his Gordita or Corina ! I'll never forget his voice or him calling me into the room for a favor or "his juice". His death is paralyzing. It truly breaks not only my heart but the thousands of people who care and love him as well. There will never ever be another Dr. Ewing! His legacy will carry on forever. I'm so grateful to have been able to meet him and see him everyday. I'll never ever forget him. The last day I saw him was Friday 8.29.14. I went to visit him & he goes "get your phone out, I want some Spanish food from Jackson heights" lol .. typical Dr.Ewing always loved himself a great meal. I was able to get him some dinner and my boyfriend and I sat with him and his brothers and had a great time enjoyed some of his wonderful stories and laughs. I got the chance to give him a kiss and hug not knowing it would be my last. I'll always love you Dr. Ewing, now it's time for you to finally get some rest. You always said you'd work till the day you die and that's exactly what you did. God Bless You.
Love you always and forever

Kenneth Ewing has been my doctor since he first moved into Harbor Acres. I remember him as a child doing house calls when I was sick. He was no nonsense & did not suffer fools for a moment. His honesty & his gruff, straight-forward manner could be difficult to work around, but at the same time he had a heart of solid gold & took the health & well-being of his patients very personally. He saved my father's life on more then one occasion & I can honestly say that without his attention my own health at 53 would be vastly different.
Dr. Ewing was the kind of doctor that no matter how busy he was or how full his office may be with waiting patients, he would always take a few minutes to get personal, share a joke or a story or listen to some aspect of your life that wasn't connected to charts & instruments & tests. And it was in those moments, when his eyes would soften at some trouble you had or that little grin would come out over a shared joy, that you knew how lucky you were to have this good man in your life; indeed, to have your life in his hands. He is my doctor & my friend & I miss him.
Peace

Dr. Ewing was suggested to me by my cousin who worked at St. Francis. I hadn't had a doctor for many years. That was about 15 years ago, and am so lucky that I had the chance to know him. He would great me by grabbing my belly and asking when am I going to lose this. After only a short time it was like visiting a friend, we would talk about everything and anything, travel, fishing, politics, and the state of the world. What a wonderful person, I will miss him.

A couple of years ago my wife and I arrived at a restaurant where Dr. Ewing, his wife and mother-in-law were having dinner. Quietly, I asked our waiter to put their dinners on my bill. "You'll have to get on line," the waiter said. "There are two others ahead of you who want to do the same thing."
Dr. Ewing was my great friend. And he was a brilliant doctor. He saved my wife's life when another doctor mis-diagnosed her pneumonia. He helped me through a couple of serious health issues. He was incredibly thorough. He was analytical. He cared. And in the middle of it all, we talked dogs and fishing and soccer. He was sarcastic and tender and gruff at the same time, making your exam seem less like a task to be over with, and more like a visit with your best friend.
I never left his office that I wasn't better for the experience -- not just for the excellent care, but for the pleasure of his company.
Rest in peace, dear Dr. Ewing. I'm among the many, many people who love you.

Dad was at most times, a challenging patient, and Dr. Ewing was one doctor we knew he would listen too!! They jokingly and affectionately greeted each other "hello grumpy" which would lead them into the business at hand- always done with a level of supreme compassion...to our father's dying day.
