Obituary of Phyllis K. Davies

Please share a memory of Phyllis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Phyllis Katherine Davies, age 69, of Douglaston, went to her heavenly home on October 16, 2015, after a five-year fight with cancer. Born in Brooklyn on November 9, 1945, she was the first child of Philip and Catherine Bruno (now deceased). She earned a B.S. and M.S. in Elementary Education from St. John’s University, and taught for several years in New York City schools before taking time off to raise her children. In 1990-1991, she returned to teaching at P.S. 221 in Little Neck. For 20 years, first grade children learned to read under her careful tutelage and the whole school benefitted from her work in the computer lab. Even after she retired, Phyllis organized the library and created a system for children to use its books. Located a few blocks from her residence, P.S. 221 functioned as a home away from home, filled with devoted friends and colleagues. A loving mother and grandmother, Phyllis is survived by a son, Keith Davies and wife, MaryAnn, and a daughter, Kimberly Krokoff and husband, Scott. A generous grandmother, Phyllis is survived by three grandchildren: Annabella Davies, Leo Krokoff, and Liv Krokoff. Phyllis loved cooking elaborate meals and baking special treats for the whole family. On most Fridays, Phyllis delighted in spending time with her grandchildren, caring for and helping them grow. Phyllis is survived by a brother, Dan Bruno and wife, Anna; and a sister, Amy Huffman, and husband, Jim. A caring aunt, she is survived by nephews and nieces: Matthew Huffman, Katie Huffman Miller, Alexandra Huffman Baumann, Rachel Huffman, and Andre Bruno. Throughout her life, Phyllis was actively engaged in her community. For many years, she served as a board member for the Douglaston Townhouse Condominium Association, where her attention to detail and commitment were appreciated. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Phyllis enjoyed traveling, reading, shopping, and going to shows and dinner with special, lifelong friends. Visitation will be at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Manhasset on Friday, October 23 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. The funeral mass will be held at St. Anastasia, Roman Catholic Church in Douglaston on Saturday, October 24 at 9:45 am. Donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation “In Memory of Phyllis K. Davies” and sent to 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016, or online at www.kidney.org.
