Obituary of Angelo D. Masso

Angelo Donald Masso passed away peacefully on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the age of 87. Angelo was born on June 11, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Sofia and Frank Masso. His parents migrated to America in 1916 from Naples, Italy and Angelo never forgot his roots. He cherished his Italian heritage and shared it lovingly and happily with all. Angelo graduated from Lafayette HS in Brooklyn and worked for many years in banking before taking a job with American Tobacco (now Beam) in 1968. Angelo met Mary Palmucci at a dance sponsored by a Catholic organization in Queens and they married in 1966. Though they never had any children, they were always very involved with their many nieces and nephews. Angelo loved to cook and was famous for his holiday dinners. He also enjoyed gardening and would whip up meals from his vegetable garden. He nurtured a prolific fig tree and loved to share figs and tomatoes with his neighbors. Angelo and Mary traveled extensively around the globe and in particular loved cruises. He was known as the family photographer and we are all grateful for the traditional Christmas Eve/Christmas Day family photographs that he started taking in the 60s and continued until his health declined in 2012. Angelo also enjoyed music and would often sing and play his electric piano for guests, while encouraging sing-a-longs. A man before his time, Angelo could not stay idle for long, and after retirement he took a job with Sears on Northern Blvd in their computer dept. He would putter in his basement creating his own computers out of spare parts and even had an International Ham Radio which allowed him to communicate with others around the world. He was a member of the American Legion in Port Washington and served in the U.S. Army and National Guard. Angelo was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease in his 60s but it only slowed him down these past 4 years. He was an inspiration in his determination to live a full and happy life despite some of his limitations. Angelo is survived by his wife Mary, his siblings Peter (Dina), Ciro (Vera), Tina (Tony-dec) and Theresa (Allan). He will be missed greatly by his sister and brother in-laws Rosa and Vinnie Buquicchio who were one of Angelo and Mary's closest friends over the past many years.
