Obituary of Ruth Fisher

Ruth F. Fisher Ruth F. Fisher, 89, long time resident of Great Neck died peacefully at home on August 23. Born in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania and educated in Great Neck public schools, she was a member of the St. Aloysius Parish. Survivors include her sister, Jule A. Kline of Norwalk, Connecticut and two nieces and two nephews. She is predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Edward F. Fisher, sister, Helen L. Thiel, and nephew, Robert P. Thiel. Mrs. Fisher was an active member of the North Hempstead Unit of the American Cancer Society. At a luncheon she hosted, she met astrologist, Jean Dixon, who predicted that Ruth would start her own organization. And she did. With the support of friends from the American Cancer Society, Ruth Fisher founded Cancer Volunteers of America (CVA). It was with the financial support of her husband, Ed, coupled with the help from celebrities and politicians that CVA’s membership grew. Later, Mrs. Fisher established The Ruth Fisher Cancer Scholarship fund for students who volunteered their services to CVA. Each year, one graduating senior received a scholarship award. Ruth Fisher’s service to her community was far-reaching. She organized the Ladies of Charity for Sisters of Mercy and Other Religious Orders—Ladies of Charity of the Diocese of New York—and the Rosary Society of St. Aloysius Church. A special prayer service was held on Friday, August 26 by close friend, Sister Francis M. Sheridan. Internment followed at Flushing Cemetery under the direction of the Fairchild Sons, Inc. A donation to the charity of choice in memory of Ruth F. Fisher is greatly appreciated.
