Obituary of Hanford V. Merritt, II

Hanford V. Merritt II of Holliswood, NY was born to Elsie and Hanford Merritt on June 7, 1934. Survived by his 3 loving sons Hanford, John and Wesley. Graduated from High School of Music and Art in 1952. Attended numerous Art Students League workshops. Graduated Hofstra University in 1958 where he played lacrosse and joined the ROTC. Served in the Army Reserves from 1957-1963 where he held the rank of SP5 as a sharpshooter on the Rifle Team. He had a lengthy career as a teacher, starting at Martin Luther High School and Woodhull Academy and spent the last 35 years of his career as a special education teacher at BOCES (The Career Development Center and The Rosemary Kennedy School). He enjoyed sharing his love for horticulture, wood-working and ceramics with his students throughout his career and created stage sets for school performances. Officer of Information for NABCOT for 20 years and worked on all the artwork for the newsletter. He retired in 1996. Every Summer was spent at the beloved family farm in the Adirondacks. His caring, light-hearted spirit and laughter will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him. Visitation on Thursday, October 13 from 7-9 pm. Funeral Service on Friday, October 14 at 10 am. Both will be held at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY. Internment to follow Friday’s service at Cypress Hills Cemetery, 833 Jamaica Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
