Obituary of Scott H. Jaggar
Please share a memory of Scott to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Scott Jaggar of Port Washington, NY, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the age of 94. He was born in Oakley, Kansas to Hulbert and Helen Jaggar. Scott was a thoughtful, kind, and remarkable man.
During WWII, he trained at Yale University to be a Japanese Interpreter with the Army Ground Forces. Following the war, his knowledge of Japanese led to his study of Asian Civilizations at the University of Michigan, where he earned a BA and an MA in just three years.
After he graduated, a company with an eye for talent enticed him and a handful of other professionals to come to its headquarters in New York and help it integrate a new technology into its daily enterprise. The technology was the computer and the company was UPS. Scott had a wonderful career at UPS, starting with loading packages in trucks to becoming the national data processing manager for the company.
In 1964, Scott met Angela and their relationship developed into a wonderful marriage of fifty years. In retirement, Scott and Angela launched The Angela & Scott Jaggar Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has given more than $700,000 to twentyseven nonprofit organizations that improve the quality of life through education, the performing arts, and social services that benefit children, families and the communities in which they live. Scott and Angela also are major benefactors of the Jaggar Community Fellows Program, an internship program at Adelphi University that offers students valuable opportunities to work and learn in the not-for-profit sector.
Scott leaves behind his beloved wife, Angela, who will continue the philanthropic endeavors that they built together. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Austin, and her husband, Gene, of Dallas, TX and their four children, Kathy, John, Thomas and Michael. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, George Maestri, and his wife, Nancy, of Columbia, MD and their three children, Kristen, Nicole and Lisa.
A wake will take place Saturday, June 10th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fairchild Sons Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Scott’s honor to your favorite charity or The Angela & Scott Jaggar Foundation, Inc., c/o Wunderlich Securities, 3102 West End Avenue, Suite 750, Nashville, TN 37203.
