I have been close friends with Betty for over 35 years and was friends with Angelo, too, before he passed away. Both were kind and wonderful people. Betty has been my rock through all these years, the person I could turn to for solace and reassurance as well as for fun and celebration. No one will every replace her in my life. I miss her so much already and I cannot yet really process that she is gone. Below is a poem I wrote when Angelo died. It was always very much written for both of them. Though I'm sure I will be trying, I don't know if I will come up for a better tribute for Betty, a woman I love with all my heart. ANGELS for Betty & Angelo Not the usual kind, diaphanous, their heads adrift in clouds but the sturdy sort flesh of the earth the hardworking holy busy at jobs not heavenly but shepherding their blessings raising children God believes in. No time for harp playing here. The strings they pluck are not tuned but wrapped around important packages laced over the tongues of small shoes. Still, there is this fascination with wings – outstretched appendages of model planes rising and gliding at his command, a wilderness of birds their feathered arms extended to the sky to ride the thermals just above her halo. Two people destined to be kind they wind their spirits through the air until one day he rises like a vapor out of sight and she, with no controls to land his flight, is forced to re-negotiate the wind the dips and swirls of her own grace the painful aerodynamics of love.
