Obituary of John Evans Carranza
John Carranza, 96, of Port Washington, NY died peacefully in his sleep on August 6, 2017. He was born in College Point, NY on April 20, 1921. He graduated from Flushing High School where he lettered in track. At age 21 John was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps and served in WWII until it ended in 1945. While stationed around the world, he visited Egypt, the Phillipines and China. Through his service he was eligible for the GI Bill. John attended Syracuse University where he studied his passion of music, specifically the piano. He won many collegiate songwriting contests before his graduation in 1949. He is a proud Alumnus of the Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. In 1955 he married Anastacia "Stacy" Shipula from Wilkes-Barre, PA.
That same year he became owner of the North Shore Piano & Organ store in Little Neck, NY. He ran the successful business from 1955 to 2007. John is a Lifetime Member at Port Washington Yacht Club since 1954 where he kept his Sea Sprite sailboat, High C for 55 years. John played the organ for The Christmas Carols every year for decades. He enjoyed tennis and all the joys PWYC. He spent his spare time golfing, sailing on Manhasset Bay, playing the piano, visiting with friends and telling stories.
John was an active member of the Manhasset Men's Club and The American Legion and where he participated in many Memorial Day parades. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.
John is preceded by this mother, Josephine Carranza and brother, Edward Carranza. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Stacy Carranza; daughters Leslie Carranza of New York City, Cathy Pigott (Tim) of Roswell, GA, Stacy Fairley (Sam) of Basking Ridge, NJ and five grandchildren Casey Pigott, Megan Pigott, Jack Pigott, Deirdre Fairley and Maggie Fairley.
Visiting Hours will be Friday August 11, 2017 from 1-4pm and 6-8pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter's of Alcantara Church in Port Washington at 11am Saturday. Reception to follow at the Carranza Home at 16 Bayview Avenue, Pt. Washington, NY
