Obituary of Robert Hamilton Flynn

FLYNN—Robert Hamilton, of Manhasset, NY passed from this life on February 20, 2018 after a long illness. Born on December 20, 1929 to Robert J. and Marjorie Schneider Flynn, Robert grew up in Queens, NY.  Robert was a strong, thoughtful, and caring man who made the lives of those around him that much richer for knowing him. He will be dearly missed. His devotion to and his love for his wife, family, and friends, classical music, and his career in teaching are well-known.  Robert was a 1951 graduate of Columbia College in New York and received Master degrees from Teachers College at Columbia and Hofstra University. He also studied at the graduate level at The Breadloaf School of English in Vermont.  He taught English in Levittown, Great Neck, The American Institute of Banking, Hofstra University, and Nassau Community College. Robert also served on the Stony Brook University Council for 17 years. In the late 60’s, he transitioned to being a private banker, working over the years for Valueline Investments, TC Thomson & Associates, and Brown Brothers Harriman.  His love for his community was reflected in his membership for 45 years in the Bayview Civic Association. The devoted husband of Margaret for sixty-one years, Robert is the beloved father of Maura Flynn Arcidiacono, Christopher E. Flynn, Hill H. Flynn, Geoffrey J. Flynn and grandfather to Christine, Francesca, and Theresa Arcidiacono of Douglaston, Julia Flynn Chinniah, Emilie, Audrey, and Edward Flynn of Miami, and Lydia and Claire Flynn of Albany.  In addition, Robert is survived by his brother, Donald C. Flynn of Walnut Creek, CA, and his sister-in-law, Reina Flynn.  A lifelong supporter of Catholic charities, Robert has been a Manhasset resident and active member of St. Mary's Church for 60 years. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Church of Saint Mary, 1300 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, New York 11030. Donations may also be made in Robert’s name to Columbia University Gift Systems, Columbia Alumni Center, 622 W. 113th Street, MC 4524, New York, NY 10025 and to the Middlebury Breadloaf School of English, 75 Franklin Street, Middlebury, VT 05753
