Obituary of Kathleen A. Mulryan
KATHLEEN MULRYAN
1947-2018
Kathy was born in Queens, New York on March 8, 1947, the first child of Thomas and Catherine Conners. Kathy grew up in Rosedale, Queens with her siblings, Maureen, Tom and Patrick, and attended St. Clare’s School. She went to high school at The Mary Louis Academy and graduated in 1967. Thereupon, Kathy began nursing school at her beloved St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, where she made many life-long friends. Kathy met the love of her life, John (Jack) Mulryan, while she was at St. Vincent’s and they married in 1969. Kathy and Jack had two children, Kieran (Lauren) and Brendan (Carolyn). Brendan and Carolyn have two young sons, Matthew and Mark.
After graduation, Kathy worked at St Vincent’s Hospital for several years. Jack and Kathy eventually moved to Manhasset, where they raised their children. They were long-time, active members of St. Mary’s Parish, Manhasset, where both their sons were active in parish ministry.
In 1974, Kathy earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Hunter College, and later served as a Professor of Nursing for many years. Kathy’s skill and devotion to nursing were unsurpassed. In addition to caring for her patients and students, Kathy was consulted on every medical concern of her friends, her family members, and her neighbors. Each and every concern was met with skilled advice and loving care. She also accompanied many family members and friends through their last days on this earth, and she was an incredibly loving and peaceful companion for each of them.
Kathy also volunteered for several years as a Family Court Advocate, assisting teenagers in foster care. She was also a frequent volunteer at the Nassau County Juvenile Detention Center, bringing hospitality and care to many young teens.
Kathy and Jack enjoyed travelling after their boys were grown. One of the travel highlights for Kathy was volunteering at Mother Teresa’s childcare center in Calcutta.
Kathy bravely dealt with Alzheimer’s disease for approximately seven years. Jack’s continuous care and love for Kathy were a wonder to behold. He held her hand, patted her, loved her, and ministered to her every hour of the day and night. No greater love!
Kathy loved her God with continuous gratitude and devotion. She taught many others, by her quiet example, to do the same. Kathy also loved her immediate and extended family, and she dropped everything to assist when anyone was in need. She was particularly involved with her many friends, as well as her nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, whom she loved dearly. She will be so missed by so many.
Kathy’s life was one of love and devoted service. There is no doubt she was greeted by her beloved Lord with the most precious of words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Association or the Alzheimer’s Association would be greatly appreciated.
