Here is how God works….I just upgraded my IPhone and am closing out old internet search tabs. Came upon Deron’s funeral service….I am a criminal defense attorney for 31 years. Deron, and I especially enjoyed putting the emphasis on the last syllable: De-RON, we were part of a small group of attorneys that handled cases all over NYC. I was privileged to be his co-counsel on a number of cases where we represented codefendants. If I ever needed a lawyer, he would have been the one I would call. He treated his clients with respect, humor, honesty and human warmth, something lacking in our most honorable profession. I was born in 1964 Deron in 65, his untimely passing makes me appreciate the value of every day we are gifted. RIP my friend.

We met when we was in 7th grade center in our hometown of Brentwood, New York. Deron was always kind with a good sense of humor. Deron was passionate about helping people. We graduated Brentwood High School in 1983. He told me he was going to study law and I told hold him I was going to study Fashion Design. He told me I would be better being a nurse. That is your calling. I never got the chance to tell him that I not only became a fashion designer but also a Registered Nurse. We lost touch with each other over the years but we will always be friends and part of my Brentwood family. My condolences and prayers to his family and friends. God called one of his angels home.

Deron was simply the most humble and kind person. He had vast amounts of talent and achieved great success in all aspects of his life, and I never once heard him brag once, and he had a lot to brag about. He cared first and foremost about his family, and spoke glowingly about his children. He cared about the rights of the clients he bled for, and was a true role model for all of us attorneys who started and grew with him and we all admired his greatness in the courtroom. Deron was wonderful and will be painfully missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

As a young girl and young adult Deron was my brother, friend, mentor, role model and sports buddy. He had high standards and so much integrity and yet was funny and unassuming. I always laughed to myself about his suits during the week and his backward baseball caps on the weekends.
Deron was one of the greatest influences in my life. I have and always will miss him.

I knew Deron since about when he first came came to Legal Aid many years ago. Easily one of the most talented criminal defense lawyers I have ever known, he was also a quiet, unassuming, easy person to talk to. For a number of years he was in the office next to mine in a suite and he and I would often shoot the breeze at the end of the day, joking about the craziness in court that day, or sometimes talking about legal issues in our cases. Deron was full of good ideas and I am certain I got far more good advice than I ever gave in those sessions.
One of the most remarkable things about those times sharing space with Deron was how I began to notice a recurring theme. Deron would tell me a story about some impossible case he had with terrible facts and no chance of success. We would have a bit of a laugh, as defense lawyers sometimes do, at the horror of having to take on no win situations from time to time. Time would pass and then one day I would remember the case and ask him, “Hey Deron, what happened with that case you were telling me about?” And then Deron would say to me, in his unboastful, humble sort of way, with that trace of a smile hiding in his expression, something like, “Oh we won that one.” And if I didn’t sit him down and make him tell me how the heck he did it, he would have been prepared to change the subject to something else, anything else but himself. Once or twice you can chalk up to chance. But this happened over and over while I shared the suite with him. It seemed like there was never a case he couldn’t win. Deron was a real competitor, and lucky were his clients, because with him in the game, anything was possible. I don’t think Deron really believed in the no win situation.
Chance didn’t put us together on the same case very often over the years, but in those few cases where I had the privilege to be his co-counsel, I was delighted because it was time to take notes and go to school.
It isn’t very often that a successful lawyer is quiet about his successes. Deron really was one-of-a-kind. We will all miss him.
