Obituary of Patrick Eugene Mc Vicar

Patrick Eugene McVicar was born on December 14, 1934. He was the 4th of 6 children born to Patrick and Catherine McVicar, Irish immigrants from County Tyrone, in the High Bridge section of the Bronx. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School and served in the Army in the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea he studied at Iona College and played basketball for them. Patrick was a forward thinking, fun loving young man, frequenting jazz clubs in Harlem. He had worked at Grand Union as a High School student and went back to them, rising up through the ranks, later becoming a regional manager in charge of stores ranging from Manhattan up to Fairfield County in Connecticut. Patrick married his wife of 51 years on June 10, 1967. They met in Riverdale, at the store he was managing, had their first kiss in the pickle isle and so started the great love of his life. Shortly thereafter followed three children; Kathryn Ann, Patrick Scott and John Christian. In 1970 they moved to Manhasset, where they have been active members of the community since that time. Later he became an executive recruiter specializing in consumer package goods. His endeavors lead him to investments in real estate. It’s not clear that he ever really retired. He simply allowed his sons to slowly do more and more over time. Patrick was able to parley his charm and ability to see commonalities into a talent for bringing people together who might never have otherwise met. He did this in any and all avenues of his life, finding the most joy in finding and linking individuals together to the benefit of all. He could go anywhere, meet anyone and invariably find that connection to someone or something that would put that person at ease and moved them forward. Patrick believed in knowledge, history, and family. He tried to help the down trodden and had a soft spot for anyone who struggled without giving up. Patrick Eugene McVicar passed away on August 1, 2018 as the oldest surviving McVicar ever. He was 83 years of age. He had suffered from long standing lung disease, but it was his overly large heart that failed him in the end. He is survived by his wife, Melinda; their three children Kathryn Anne, Patrick Scott, John Christian; daughter-in law Kristine (Zeichner); and 5 grandchildren; Kate Elizabeth, Ava Marie, Grace Olivia, John and Kristine’s children and Taylor Christina, and Sebastian Patrick,  Kathryn’s children.
