Obituary of Gloria Neher
Gloria Neher, “Mimi” - August 4, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Gloria Neher announces her passing on Saturday, August 4th, 2018. She lived most of her adult life as a Long Islander and resided in Huntington, NY at the time of her passing
Gloria was born, the second of two daughters to Angelina and John Clemente. She was raised, along with her sister Dora in the Queens, NY neighborhood of Long Island City. She enjoyed a happy childhood there and for her entire life would speak with pride about the tight knit Italian American community that existed there at that time. It was a place where she established many lifelong friendships. Gloria attended and graduated from Julia Richman High School in Manhattan which was one of New York City’s most highly rated schools.
From her earliest days she had a great interest in the creative arts. She had a keen eye for fashion, drawing and painting and as she grew in to an adult her interests expanded to include home decor and floral design. She worked professionally as a floral designer for a number of years. She was an avid collector of antique furniture and for a period of time focused her energies on oil-painting which she mastered almost without effort. She had the gift of being able to derive beauty and balance from anything she put her hand to. Even as a retiree Gloria stayed involved in the arts by donating her time to the Sands Point Museum and to the Nassau County Museum of Art.
Her creative side was always showing itself in some way or other but Gloria or “Mimi,” the name she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, will be remembered most by her family as a caring and loving mother and grandmother. She took her job as a mother and homemaker very seriously and her family meant the world to her. She would make sure everyone had a healthy, balanced and well prepared meal every day. She took pride and joy in upholding holiday traditions and saw them as an important part of keeping everyone together. She had a great deal of wisdom and would be happy to lend ideas to help solve problems. She had an inexplicable way of making loved ones know she was with them each step of the way.
To people outside of the family she will be remembered for her kindness. She encouraged friends and neighbors to visit and made sure everyone was treated with respect and warmth. She loved to entertain and was a great conversationalist. She was gracious and giving and her friendships were important to her. Her thought was always to include and honor. Her wish was to always bring people together.
Gloria is survived by her three sons, Eric Neher, Randal Neher and Scott Neher, her seven grandchildren, Erica Neher, Alison Neher, Luke Neher, Sara Neher, Joanna Neher, Hamish Neher and the youngest, Vizcaya Neher to whom she was a mother figure, her Daughters in law Kathy Neher and Cathy Underhill and her sister Dora Serio. She is also survived by her loving niece, nephews, cousins, second cousins and relations by marriage.
She will be missed and never forgotten by all who loved her.
