Obituary of Thomas C. Havens

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Thomas Christopher Havens, 58, of Port Washington, NY, beloved husband for 25 years of Robin Weintraub Havens, passed away suddenly on Monday, August 27, 2018. One of three children born in the Bronx to Donald Havens and the late Patricia Havens, Tom grew up in the Bronx before the family relocated to Long Island and settled in Nesconset, NY. Tom earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1982 from Duke University, graduating cum laude; and his Juris Doctor in 1985 from Washington and Lee School of Law, where he was the Executive Editor of the Law Review. Tom was a partner at the firm of Loeb & Loeb, practicing in the New York office as an energy transactional attorney with a background in state and federal energy regulation and policy with a focus on the renewable energy sector. He represented domestic and foreign developers, public utilities, and financial institutions on numerous transactions involving the development, construction, purchase, sale and financing of solar, wind and other clean energy projects across the United States. Tom also was actively involved in pro bono work, assisting nonprofits and community-based organizations with solar power and clean energy programs.

Tom was on the board of Residents Forward, a community based organization in Port Washington whose mission is to protect and advance the beauty and sustainability of the peninsula, where he lent his talents working on opportunities to create renewable energy options in the community. He was on fundraising committees for and provided pro bono services to the Elija Foundation in Levittown, and the Elija Farm in Huntington, which are organizations that support the needs of children and adults with autism, including Tom’s son Jake.

Tom was a self-described audiophile. He loved listening to high quality music- particularly from the late 70’s era, as his son Ryan would say. He was athletic and played ice hockey in high school, college and in adult leagues and excelled as a goaltender. He was an avid sports fan, thoroughly devoted to his beloved New York Yankees, Rangers and Giants, and Duke Men’s Basketball although he sometimes had trouble watching them play if they were losing. Tom’s love of comedy and his ability to quote just about every funny line from The Honeymooners, The Odd Couple, and every Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and Monty Python comedy ever made, was legendary among his family and friends. And just as endearing as his love of laughter was Tom’s notorious hatred of green vegetables; although, he often boasted of once eating a raw green bean on a

dare. His laughter, his warmth and his kind eyes, which reflected the kindest heart, will remain with everyone who loved him for the rest of our days.

In addition to his wife, Robin, Tom, leaves behind two beautiful children, Ryan and Jake; a sister, Karen Leone and her husband Gene; and his brother and best friend, Mark Havens and his wife Renee. Tom also leaves behind Robin’s adoring parents, Robert and Sandra Weintraub; Robin’s brother, Bruce Weintraub, and his wife, Suzanne; and Robin’s sister, Susan Catalfumo and her husband Dan of; 9 adoring nieces and nephews, Ethan and William Havens, Julianna, Dominique, Michael, and Adrienne Leone and Jordan, Adam and Jillian Weintraub; 22 cousins; countless friends and colleagues who loved Tom and will miss him terribly. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2018, at St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1327 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, N.Y.; burial to follow at Nassau Knowles Cemetery, 500 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, NY. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to a fund set up to help support Tom’s son Jake who is severely impaired by autism and who will need life-long 24/7 care and support.
