Obituary of Joan Curran Lysaght

Joan Lysaght, 91, passed away on October 4th at Stern Family Rehabilitation Center in Manhasset New York where she was beloved by staff and accompanied 24 hours a day by her children and personal aides while under the medical supervision of her daughter, Dr. Carole Lysaght-Moodhe.
Born on May 8, 1927, the seventh child of Agnes and Thomas Curran, Joan was raised in Brooklyn. Her fond memories include receiving cucumbers to munch on from working farmers where Marine Park now lies while walking to Mill Pond to swim. Her father‘s death when she was six was the seminal event of her childhood. Her devoted mother went to work and, as a single parent, doted on her youngest child.
The second seminal event in Joan‘s life was meeting “Ace” Jack Lysaght in 1942. Parted by the war and Jack’s participation in the Normandy invasion, they reunited to marry in 1947 and to live and love until their 56th wedding anniversary.
Their seven children were the center of their lives. They not only raised them with spiritual values and a Catholic education, but put all seven through college. Three of her daughters attended Saint Brendan‘s high school, as she had.
Thanks to the help of her best friend - her widowed mother - Joan somehow also managed to teach Catholic grade school in the 1960s for a number of years.
With all of life’s challenges, Joan always looked forward to accompanying Jack to Eastern Airlines annual global conferences. She proudly claimed to have travelled to every continent (with the exception of Antarctica).
In 1972, Eastern Airlines transferred executive operations to Florida and, after living in the same house for 45 years, Joan moved south with Jack and their three youngest children.
When the “nest” emptied, Joan at age 55 went back to work at Burdine’s Department Store where she reveled in new acquaintances and 25% discounts!
Renowned for her impeccable memory – often displayed while watching Jeopardy, Joan was a lover of the best selling fiction and read an average of two or three novels a week. An elegant dresser, Joan daily donned her earrings and lipstick - until the very night her soul ascended.
The matriarch and fulcrum of the family loved family holiday gatherings - especially Christmas. Joan leaves a hole as well as a loving imprint in the lives of her living children: Joan Mattison, Susan Lysaght, Tom Lysaght, Dr. Carole Lysaght-Moodhe, and Judy Lysaght-Marikos. (Her children Jaclyn McBride and John Joseph Lysaght Jr. pre-deceased her.) Devoted “Grandma Joan” is also survived by her seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
