Obituary of Lien-Sheng Chuang, Ph.D., FInstP
On Friday, the 7th of December 2018, Lien-Sheng Chuang, Ph.D., FInstP, loving husband and father of three children, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 92, in Manhasset, New York. Dr. Chuang was a Professor of Physics in Hong Kong for three decades. He was known for his indomitable spirit, which took him from a small fishing village in Taiwan to many countries throughout the world, and which was matched only by his compassion and kindness. Dr. Chuang had a passion for golf and tennis, in which he won several championships at Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Chuang was born in 1926 in Donggang, Taiwan, to the late Shui Shi Chuang and late Jian Lin Chuang. He graduated from National Taiwan Normal University in 1950. Dr. Chuang attended the University of Kansas and the University of Washington in 1952 on a scholarship from the U.S. Department of State, to take up graduate studies in physics. He was the first scholar to the U.S.A. from his region. In 1967, he received his Ph.D. degree from Tokyo University of Education.
After returning from his studies in the United States, Dr. Chuang served as Assistant Professor at National Taiwan Normal University, and then served as Assistant Professor and Director of the Research Lab at Institute of Nuclear Science of Tsing Hua University, from 1958 to 1962. He also taught and completed research work at the Institute of Radioisotopes in Tokyo and Tung Hai University in Taiwan.
Dr. Chuang joined the Physics Department of Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong, in 1962, starting as a lecturer and advancing to the position of Professor of Physics, a position he held until 1990, when he retired. He also held the position of Radiation Officer of the University for the Hong Kong Government, as well as the Chairman of the Department. In recognition of Dr. Chuang's accomplishments in physics and the impact he made in his sector, he was recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, London, U.K. (FInstP).
After his retirement from Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr. Chuang accepted the position of Professor of Physics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a position he held from 1990 until 1992.
Dr. Chuang authored the book Experimental Modern Physics, a text and guide for laboratory courses in modern physics, in the Chinese language, and published over one hundred manuscripts, including in the journals Science and Nature.
Dr. Chuang is survived by his beloved wife Chueihua, of 63 years, a retired lecturer of the Japanese language, and his three children, Tsu Huang (Linus) and his wife, Helen, both physicians in Connecticut and New York; Enna and partner Roger S. Antao, both attorneys in New York and New Jersey; and Tsu Tshen (Aaron) and his wife, Anna, both research scientists in Italy and the U.K.; and two granddaughters, Kristin, an entrepreneur in New York, and Jessalyn, an engineering student at Columbia University in New York, and many nieces and nephews, as well as his devoted caregiver, Fan Jie. Dr. Chuang is also survived by many devoted students, many of whom kept in touch with him throughout their careers.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at 9:00 a.m., at the Fairchild Sons, Inc. Funeral Chapel, at 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, New York.
