On Wednesday January 30, Thomas Madigan Sr. a former Trustee of the Alert Engine Hook Ladder & Hose in Great Neck passed away as a result of fire service related cancer at the age of 77. He joined the Alerts on September 5, 1963, serving in many roles throughout the years. He was a long time Trustee of the Department until December 2018, was a figurehead in the restoration and display of the departments 1947 American LaFrance Pumper which received awards throughout the country. Where that truck was at a fire department muster you would find Tom there. He was making sure it was in the same condition as it was when the Alerts took possession of the truck in 1947.
Tom received many decorations throughout his career for distinguished service to the department and the community. On September 11, 2001, he was part of the department’s deployment to the World Trade Center and worked around ground zero in the days after the attack. In addition, he worked with the Alerts to provide assistance to the area affected by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.
Tom worked in Great Neck for 37 years for Massaro Bros. Oil Company as a Service Technician and long time Service Manager. He finished his career with Perillo Oil in 2014 to spend more time with his family. He was a friend to everyone he ever met and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. All that was ever needed was someone to say “Hey Tom…” and he would stop in to make something happen. The community and the Alert Fire Company lost a true friend. He will be missed greatly by those whomever had the pleasure to meet him and especially those who loved him.
