Mrs. Varlotta was such an inspiration. She always had a huge smile on her face and I loved her love for life and positivity. I greatly miss her.

It was my pleasure get to know Isabel as a member of the Great Neck Historical Society. She loved her community. She was bright, capable, and understanding of other people. And always upbeat. Anytime I called and asked her how she was, her answer was always the same "Great." Whether or not she actually felt great, she sure acted as if she did. She took on many tasks, and would have done even more if she had been asked. She shouldered many burdens in the past few years, and took them on gracefully. Her husband's illness and death, the sale of her lovely home, and the move to Jefferson's Ferry were all life altering, but outwardly Isabel took it all in stride. She was always gracious, and a good friend. I will miss her.

WHAT IS DYING?
A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, "she is gone". Gone where?
Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her last. The diminished size, and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says "She is gone", there are others who are watching her coming , and other voices take up a glad shout, "There she comes" and that is dying.

My wife, Susan and, I first met Isabel almost 40 years ago through her husband Gerard.
Varlotta Construction was a watermain contractor in NYC, a successful and well-respected contractor. The company, at that time, did most of the emergency water main repair work for the City of NY. If there was a break, Jerry would be there at three in the morning (or whenever) and would stay there, for as long as it took, sleeping in his car, until the break was repaired, and the site cleaned up. I asked Jerry how he managed it.
His reply was simple – my wife Isabel.
When we first met Isabel, we were hugely impressed by her. She ran the company as President – not in name only but, as Jerry told me, without her he never would have been nearly as successful as they were. She did what is probably the most difficult aspect of running a construction company, the hidden part, making sure that everything from getting the bid documents to closing out the job at the end was done properly and well and then she had to collect the monies that they were owed.
Everybody sees the supervisor in the hard hat as special; but, she was the most crucial part of their success.
Beyond that, she raised four incredible human beings. All of them Doctors. I once asked Jerry how he accomplished that, his reply was again – Isabel. He believed that she was the lynchpin of their family.
Rusty, David, Laurie, and Linda. You are all truly blessed with two wonderful and loving parents, both of whom thought you were the greatest gifts God could have given them.
We will continue to pray for Isabel, Jerry, and all your families.

It is with great sadness that I hear of the passing of Mrs. Varlotta. She was a dear women and at times, a second mother. She will be missed terribly, but she has left behind a wonderful legacy in her children and grandchildren.
I have so many fond memories of spending time at the Varlotta home. As a junior high school and high school student having sleep overs at the house. As a young professional, spending time in the kitchen talking about life, politics etc. and of course on Christmas day, being included in the family meals and activities and welcome despite the fact that I am not Christian.
She was an extraordinary women, ahead of her time! An accomplished professional, Mayor of Great Neck, and of course an amazing mother and grandmother.
It is with great regret that I can not make it in to New York to attend the funeral, but I hope these few words find their way to the family and bring a little joy to them in this sad time. ... Laurie, I love you with all my heart and your Mom's memory will be a blessing to us all!
