Please share a memory of Rita to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rita Gannon Powers, age 96, died peacefully at Queen of Peace Residence, Queens Village on December 28, 2019. She was born on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on May 8, 1923, the daughter of Irish immigrants Michael Gannon and Nellie Murray. She graduated from St. Jean Baptiste School and High School on Lexington Avenue in New York before attending Notre Dame College on Staten Island where she received a BA degree in 1944. She married John B. Powers in April 1949, a happy marriage that lasted for 55 years. She and her family moved to Manhasset in 1954 where she raised a family of five on Beechwood Avenue – in the only house she would ever call home. She was an active and devoted member of St Mary’s parish and sent all of her children through its grammar and high school.
She was preceded in death by her husband John and her brothers Vincent Gannon and Rev Edmund Murray Gannon. She is survived by her children John G. Powers of Kirkwood, MO; Joseph K. Powers and his spouse Ellen of Port Washington, NY; Mary Ellen Powers of Tinton Falls, NJ; Ann Synan and her spouse William of Iowa City, IA; and Rev Robert M. Powers, pastor of St Patrick’s Church, Long Island City, NY.
Her 10 grandchildren are Maureen Meyer and her spouse Chris of Huntington, NY; Joseph T. Powers and his spouse Bella of Redwood City, CA; Katherine Powers of Manhattan; Bridget Harr and her spouse Jesse of Morganville, NJ; Nancy Huder and her spouse Josh of Falls Church, VA; Julie O’Grady and her spouse Trevor of Lambertville, NJ; Colleen Tavani and her spouse Mike of Philadelphia, PA; Catherine Synan of Omaha, NE; Mariel Synan of Manhattan; and Nicholas Synan of Manhattan. Her 11 great-grandchildren are Chris, Kevin and Emily Meyer; Abe and Tom Powers; Paxton and Kiera Harr; Adalyn, Carstens and Rowan Huder; and Phoebe O’Grady. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Those who wish, may make a gift in Rita’s memory to St. Mary’s Church or Queen of Peace Residence.
