Obituary of Jane Gatti
Please share a memory of Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jane Gatti was born in New York City on November 8, 1929, first of the six children of Joseph Gatti and Dorothy ("Dot") Higgins. As a very young child Jane resided in "the old house" owned by her grandparents, Joseph and Carmela (nee Cosenza) Gatti, in Harlem. She was raised with her sisters and brothers ~ Sue, Joe, Happy, Candy and Geri ~ in Great Neck before life took her to Brooklyn, Oyster Bay, Louisville, and ultimately to the West Coast and her favorite city, San Francisco. Always stylish, Jane for decades pursued a successful career in the fashion industry, first as a buyer for mercantile stores, and later, working into her 70's, as a retailer for clothing establishments in San Francisco. Jane was a faithful parishioner of St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown San Francisco, volunteering there as a docent for many years before returning to live with her family in New York in 2016, and dying, on February 27, 2020, a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Manhasset. Jane was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph (Mary Jo) and Edward aka Happy. She is survived by her sisters Suzanne Burke (Alexander), Candida Eggers-Dow (David) and Geraldine Constantine (Lee). Jane was the proud Aunt of 17 nephews and nieces, 33 great nephews/nieces and 1 great great nephew. Though for years she knew many of us mostly from a distance, she made her mark on our lives by annually delivering, without fail, beautiful Christmas ornaments to help us celebrate the Nativity. May God bless and keep you, Jane. You will be missed.
