Obituary of Nicolina Colalillo

Nicolina-a wife, our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter-in-law, sister-in law, aunt, cousin, and friend. Nicolina was the most loving and giving person one could know. Her love of God was only surpassed by her love for her family. We would not be the women we are today without the love, guidance and support our mom gave us throughout our lives. She taught us the true meaning of love, peace and forgiveness. Mom and Dad were married for over 65 years until Dad passed away 10 years ago. Until her death Mom could not get past his death in her arms. Mom came from Italy in 1956 at the age of 31, leaving behind her parents and brother and the only life she knew. Within that same year both her parents died, and her world and life was forever changed. Shortly after arriving to the US, and not speaking a word of English, she traveled to New York City by train to look for work so that she could help our Dad provide us with a better life. She quickly found work as a seamstress and worked in Manhattan until she retired in her early 70's. Mom's garden was extremely important to her. She needed to make sure she had enough tomatoes and peppers to give us and her neighbors. She jarred enough tomato sauce during her lifetime that we are still using it to this day. She provided us all with the most delicious meatballs, gravy and other great meals too enumerable to mention. Mom loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren immensely. We, as her daughters, often thought she loved them more than us. Even as her life was dwindling away and no longer communicating with the two of us, she would light up and even speak when her grandchildren came to visit. Mom, thank you for everything you have done for our families throughout your life. Thank you for the values you have instilled in all of us. Thank you for the wonderful memories you have given to all of us. Your love for your family will remain in our hearts forever. We love you and will miss you dearly.
