It was only today that I heard of Dr Citron’s passing, and needless to say I am shocked and saddened. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family who he loved so very much and was so proud of. I met Dr Citron in 2004 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer - an aggressive form- and my surgeon insisted that I see him. He saved my life and I will always be grateful to him. He kept me under his wing for more than 10 years til he felt my cancer was beaten. He was a most remarkable, caring man and I will never forget him. Love and prayers to all of you

I'm so sorry to read of Dr. Citron’s passing. My deepest condolences to the entire family.
He took such great care of my mom who had a rare brain tumor. And then many years later treated my Dad too. He helped them both live longer lives. When I first met him he had a tiny office, I believe it was in the research division of LIJ, with children’s drawings on the wall and a bunch of piles of grouped papers on the floor. He was calm and a good listener. And a great collaborator when other specialists were involved.
He was always a brilliant oncologist and very kind human being and I am so grateful for the extra time I had with my parents as a result of his care.

I just learned of Dr. Citron's passing today when I googled his name to contact him. I moved to Florida a number of years ago so I had not seen him in quite some time. This news is heart-breaking. I met Dr. Citron in 2003 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I truly believe he saved my life. He was an amazing doctor and an amazing human being. I still tell stories of how he treated me and all of his other patients. His bedside manner was unmatched. I'm quite sure he is the only oncologist in the world who personally served his patients lunch while we were receiving chemotherapy. He would apologize if he "made you wait" for as little as 10 minutes to see him. His entire staff were just as wonderful. I am so thankful and feel so blessed to have been lucky enough to have met this kind, wonderful, amazing human being. I am so sorry for your loss.

I just learned of the passing of Dr. Citron He was my Mother's Dr. and she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 65. She had an aggressive tumor and had a slim chance of survival. Because of his wonderful care my Mother lived until 87 years. Her name was Ruth Gruber. Even though her cancer was no longer an issue she would call him if she had a cold! I Would always tell her to leave him alone, but he always took her calls. I shed tears upon hearing of his passing. He was an Angel.

I just found out about the passing of Dr. Citron, and words cannot express the deep sadness I feel. He became my doctor when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, and up until a year ago, I was seeing him twice a year. He helped me through the most difficult time in my life, always encouraging me and celebrating the milestones I reached along the way. His sensitivity and optimism were so crucial to my sense of wellbeing. He was always willing to answer my questions, no matter how trivial, with patience and kindness. My deepest sympathies go to his family. Heartfelt thanks and eternal gratitude, Dr. Citron.

I just learned of the passing of Dear Dr Citron. He became my oncologist 6 years ago 2014 when I was diagnosed with breast Cancer and I was still seeing him twice a year. It was one of the scariest times of my life. I truly believe he was a God send to me and my husband, he walked us through that time of anxiety with kindness and companion. He listened and explained and guided us always being a calming presence. He was so considerate even down to the little things like the kind of gown used and warming of his hands before an exam, just sensible, human and relatable. I am so saddened by this news and he will be deeply missed. Dr Citron was a jewel of a Dr for me and anyone going though cancer; doing anything he could to help us though it while keeping us aware of his own struggle. What a giant lost to the medical and patient community. God gave me one of the best and Lord help us all going forward without this genuine, intelligent, sensitive Doctor. My family and I offer our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family.

All were stressed and worried at the phase,”you have cancer.” In came caring, calm, positive Dr. Citron who gave hope and understanding to this cancer patient. He was with me for 3 cancers starting in 2005. Always reassuring me and helping physically and emotionally. How many doctors give a patient his personal cell phone number! I need a loud shout out to Mrs. Citron. One 2 occasions, when I did have to call his home, she was just as comforting and kind as the doctor. Rest In Peace Dr. Citron. How many are we? How many grateful, healthy people not only cured by the cancer that afflicted us, but people, mostly women, touched by the kindness of an upstanding, compassionate man who dedicated his life to others.
In 2012 I was diagnosed, spent six months in treatment by this warm heart who had the most amazing staff at his side. I continued to see Dr Citron every six months and it was always like being in the company of a good old friend. Some years ago I was informed by a different doctor in the Lake Success area that I needed to have a biopsy on a different area of my body. I was rattled by this news and called Dr Citron's office. Come in, they said, the doctor can talk to you. After five minutes in the waiting room, he came out to bring me in. We spoke about my situation, he offered his counsel, and soothed my alarm. As I was leaving and thanked him for this impromptu visit, he assured me that once his concern, always his concern.
God bless you Dr for everything you did for all of us. Deepest condolences to a family we all knew was so loved.

Dear Citron Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I became a patient of Dr. Citron in 2009 and was still seeing him twice a year. When I think of him, the words compassionate and caring naturally come to mind, but he was also so " interested' in my life and family and never forgot to ask about them, which made him even more special. Somehow even with all the patients he saw, he always remembered where my daughters went to college and where they were living afterwards. Both of our travels were a big topic of conversation during these twice yearly visits.
When I started my treatment with him, I was so surprised when Dr. Citron was the one that served us our lunch trays and when he gave us his home number in case we needed him. It was just unheard of, but that was his way of taking care of his patients.
As you know, all of you were his real pride and joys...he always brought me up to date on engagements, weddings and new babies by showing off all the pictures in his office! And now because of his care, I am experiencing all of that with my family. I will be forever grateful that he was my oncologist.
May his memory be a blessing.

Dr. Citron was my hero and will always be my Superman. I first met him in 2007 after I was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Another oncologist didn't seem to want to take me on and told me she didn't think I would fare very well. So I went home and I researched the ASCO site and this one name, a super hero, kept showing up. He was leading the fight to end breast cancer and he was local. I made an appointment with his lovely office staff. I met Dr. C and he sat across from me reading my chart. I sat taller in my chair to gather my courage and said to him, "I know, it's pretty bad and there is not much you can do for me." His eyes left the pathology report and he looked me straight in the eye and said, "We're shooting for nothing short of a cure." He was so sure. He really meant it. He was going to fight for me and he did. I received groundbreaking care that is now the norm. I benefited from all his research and studies. Yet, despite his super powers, he was humble and down to earth. You were a person first, a patient second. He was kind and gentle and quiet. But he also had a gleam in his eye and a dry sense of humor. On top of that, if you had your infusions around noon, he would come into the chemo room and serve you lunch.
I considered him my friend and my protector and the best doctor I have ever known. I am so lucky to have known him. He accepted everything with such grace and strength. At the end of his time here on earth, he still guided us and showed us how to be strong patients. If life is a river, then death is the sky and his grace is above us all and when we feel sad or scared or apprehensive before another scan or test, all we have to do is look at the sky - Dr. C is there- we'll know it when the sun catches our eye. I will miss him more than I can say. I am sending all my love to his family, friends, co-workers and fellow patients. Rest well, Dr. C. - gina

My sincerest condolences to the entire Citron family. I worked as Dr. Citron’s medical biller for almost a decade at LIJ. His compassion and devotion to his patients was second to none. He was a pleasure to work for. Dr. Citron was also notorious for creating hysterical skits for our annual holiday parties and roping myself and many others into playing a role in them. To this day whenever Born to Be Wild comes on the radio I laugh and remember the skit we did. Dr. Citron also cared for my mother when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and we are forever thankful for his care, support, and bedside manner. He will be missed.

Marc Citron is a very good name. One memory that I will always cherish is that of being one half of the team known as the “Shmutzig Brothers” We were not world renowned in domestic home repair and custom alterations, but we could certainly put a nice coat of paint on a cement floor!
However, most of all I will always remember Marc as being a loving, caring and helpful man. I recall how helpful when my brother Walter was dealing with cancer. My brother and his wife Pam always spoke of how Marc was so sharing with his valuable knowledge and generous with his time. I also appreciate the time that Marc spent with me when I was going through my own bout with the cancer. He was never too busy to take a call or a text. There were also so many others that Marc helped in their distressful times. The value of his kindness could never be repaid.
I will always be grateful. Your name is and always be one that is very honorable, and loved by us all.
Unfortunately for us, Marc’s valuable life was cut short. We are all crushed and saddened at the news. Rest in Peace, my dear brother-in-law.
We can all take comfort that Jehovah God is watching over us and cares for us all. Whether it be from the Hebrew scriptures or the Christian Greek writings, death is likened to sleep, and when God’s time is right, we will all be awakened and reunited with our loved ones to a beautiful paradise Earth.
Job 14:13-15. “O that in the Grave you would conceal me, That you would hide me until your anger passes by, That you would set a time limit for me and remember me. If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands.”
We are all praying for the Citron, Dembitzer and in the family that you may all find comfort.
With love respect and appreciation

Dr. Citron was a Class Act, and I’ve always had the utmost respect and admiration for him!
He was a brilliant practitioner, kind, gentle, genuinely caring, and a real Gentleman- a Health Care Professional that all Doctors should aspire to emulate!
Working as a Nurse in the Oncology Department with Dr. Citron, his patients would always rave about him when they came into the treatment room- they could not say enough wonderful things about him.
I happen to be one of those patients, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for taking such good care of me; for always greeting me at work and asking me -in the most sincere manner- how I was feeling and if everything was alright; and, for providing me with the comfort of knowing that he would be there for me in an instant, any day, any time, if I ever needed anything at all. That’s how he was with all of his patients!
Not only was Dr. Citron passionate about his work, he was passionate about his beautiful family, and so very proud of them, too! Working with Dr. Citron for many years, it was evident that his family shared a love, closeness and respect that he and his lovely wife, Chris, fostered and cultivated!
I feel honored and privileged to know have known Dr. Citron and to have worked with him. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

I found out that I had breast cancer in March of 2017. There I was without anyone to say, “We are a team. We will fight together to see you through this and you will be fine.” That thought was short lived. I got a recommendation from a friend who told me that Dr. Marc Citron was the best oncologist in this world. From the instant I called the office and asked for an appointment only to find out that this hero of a doctor was going to give up having lunch to be able to have an appointment with me two days later, I knew she was correct in her assessment. I would soon also find out that the same doctor who would do that also did every single other thing humanly possible to provide extraordinary care for his patients. I would soon be given the opportunity to become one of many success stories of this world renown doctor with a stellar reputation. I owe my entire existence to this mensch who happened to save lives for a living. Dr. Citron was a genius, and cared a tremendous amount about each and every patient. I was no different. Having this doctor made me feel like I was on the 1927 Yankees; I knew I was going to win! I was going to be able to hit every curve ball pitched to me and not allow anything (CERTAINLY NOT CANCER) get in the way. I had two types of cancer in two separate tumors in one breast. Not the easiest diagnosis to be given, I had a lumpectomy and went through chemo and radiation as follow up treatments. Dr. Citron and his team of “Angels” came out of the outfield to make me feel as though I could get through this and they did everything possible to ensure I would be well taken care of.. Between Desiree, the physician assistant who also is amazing (always, always, always going “above and beyond” even by answering my questions and concerns through text messaging), the nurses and entire staff including Heather, Debbie, Jackie, Johanna, Lisa, Ann, and Suzanne were all incredible as well. Every day I would hear Dr. Citron’s voice inside my head, “Do I want to be chemo tired or exercise tired?” He had me taking daily walks of four miles. The inspiration and motivation of Dr. Citron made me feel like I was turning into a world class athlete. I remember going into Dr. Citron’s office and he would say, “How are you feeling, Kimberly?” My answer was always the same, “I feel like I have been drinking Red Bull drinks, Dr. Citron...as though I had been given a set of wings and I could fly.” My answer always made him smile in almost the same way he would react when I asked about all of his beautiful grandchildren in the pictures that surrounded his desk...from ear to ear. It is because of Dr. Citron that I missed zero days of working as a professional photographer. Not one day! I was like Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox...I had no bad days. That sounds impossible. That’s just it...Dr. Citron made me feel like anything was possible. He was 100% by my side every single step of the way. His bedside manner, knowledge, empathy shown, and certainly his professionalism blew me away. When Dr. Citron was first diagnosed with brain cancer, I knew that I wanted to work magic the way he always did for his patients. So what would I be able to do? Hmmmmmm....I bought him some apples. I figured that the apple a day trick could possibly just work to keep the doctor away! I loved Dr. Citron and have a deep appreciation for how he treated all of his patients. Do you know of any other doctor who would use a hair blower to warm up his hands before giving a breast exam? Dr. Citron was the Babe Ruth of doctors, and his legacy will live on within each and every patient he ever had and whose lives he saved with his super hero powers. He may have been as rare as an Eddie Plank or Honus Wagner T206 baseball card. He will remain in my personal Hall of Fame as well as the reason why I find myself as a cancer survivor. I will miss Dr. Citron more than you could imagine. Everybody loved him...including me! Sending all my love and deepest sympathy to Dr. Citron’s family...

My heart breaks for all of you! Dr. Citron was not only the BEST Doctor but a Beautiful person and I will be forever grateful for his expertise. He is and was the definition of what all Doctors should aspire to in both their practice and bedside manner. I keep asking why?????? He saved so many lives - why did this come his way? No answers of course but I am sure his wonderful family has the most precious memories. My utmost sympathy to all. VeraAnn Bilardi

Heartfelt sympathies to the Citron family and the Pro Health family on the passing of my wonderful Dr Citron. His kindness and gentle manner was immediately evident on the first day I met him in 2007 after my own cancer diagnosis and was ever present to this day for each of my now annual visits. One of my warmest memories was Dr Citron bringing lunch to you during your infusion sessions, such a simple gesture but such a meaningful one . He would light up whenever I asked about the newest photos in his office of his growing family! I feel blessed and very lucky to have been his patient and will miss him. Keeping you all in my prayers during this most difficult time. Rest In Peace Dr Citron JoAnne Zehnder

It was an honor and privilege to work alongside Marc. His patients have spoken glowingly and tenderly of him. His death leaves a large deficit in their lives and in our Division. I will miss the very short walk to his office (next to mine) and accessing his encyclopedic knowledge of breast cancer treatment. My condolences to the family.

I had the honor and blessing of being able to work with Dr. Citron from August-December of 2020 as his medical scribe in Lake Success. The dedication, compassion, genuine care, passion, and support he showed his patients was astounding and wildly inspiring. I watched in awe as he would always go the extra mile for every single patient, without hesitation. His selflessness, gentleness, and quick wit were contagious. I truly woke up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday excited to get to work with him. It was an honor and a beautiful privilege to have worked with him, and I truly pray that I can be half the doctor that he was one day. He spoke so highly of your family and I send my deepest condolences. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Miss you Dr. Citron. Thank you for everything you taught me. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on through all of the lives you’ve touched. Rest easy ♥️

Dr Citron, you will always be remembered as an oncologist at the top of his profession...thank you for helping so many of us and for always answering my numerous questions. When I was selecting an oncologist in 2012 my emotions were leading me to a fancy office... then.. I stopped myself in my tracks and said, "Who is the most knowlegeable at treating breast cancer, who is on the cutting edge? and that was you. Thank you Dr C. I will miss you at the 2800 building. Please watch over your beautiful family that we all know you loved tremendously by the stories you would share. Be at rest.

I am one of the lives Dr. Citron saved. In 2008 I remember sitting in his office with my husband. We both had notebooks with lots of questions. When it came time for questions, my husband piped right up. Dr. Citron looked over at him and said "Stop...she is the one with cancer. She gets to go first." I simply loved this man from that moment on. His vast knowledge and experience were secondary to his kindness and empathy. I loved hearing his soft voice telling me his stories about his beautiful family. The pictures in his office, just a small testament to his love of you all...and I know his memory will be a blessing. I will miss him so very much, however now when I look up at the night sky, there will be a new star shining brightly.

Dr. C was so much more than a wonderful doctor. I will never forget our many conversations during the course of my treatment and time spent at 2800 Marcus Ave. His participation in the Kristine Study changed the course of my life in countless ways and gave me a greater appreciation for science and those who work towards better protocols. How lucky we all were to be in his orbit. My deepest condolences to you, his family, and thank you for sharing him with all of us. Christine Roberts
