Obituary of Benedetto Iannone

It is with great sadness that the family of Benedetto Iannone announces his passing on Friday, April 9th, 2021 at the age of 84. Benny will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Maria. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Joanne (Enzo), Phyllis (Jim), Nino (Katie) and Annalisa (Mary), as well as his grandchildren, Alexia (Chase), Elana (Jaret), Simone, Chloe, Franco, Ava and Ben, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. Those who called him by name, or by Dad, Papa, Nonno, or Zio will recall his warmth, humor and smile fondly. Those who played scopa or spades with him will recall his sharp mind and love of the time spent throwing down cards together. In addition to cards, Benny often played his lucky lotto numbers, but he always knew his real fortune was found in his relationships with others.
Benedetto was born on August 30, 1936 in the town of Corato, Bari in Italy and moved his family to New York in 1971. Before that he spent time serving in the Italian military followed by work in Germany where he picked up some of the language as one of his passions was always communicating with people wherever he was. Once in America, he worked to establish a very successful construction company relying at first on the masonry skills he had acquired in Italy. His strong work ethic and jovial demeanor built him a reputation that never faded as a kind, friendly and smart man that many would turn to for advice.
Benny was often seen with a child by his side as his young friends and family members enjoyed laughing with him, learning to play cards, or acting as apprentices for small construction projects. Besides family and friends, Benny loved his garden, caring for the soil and seeds, enjoying the process as much as the produce which he would proudly share. He loved his wife's cooking so much that he was well known for not wanting to eat anywhere but home and preferably surrounded by his family and friends.
