A painting Nick made of his grandfather-Sal was someone I always looked forward to seeing sitting on his front lawn on Main Street. Always a pleasure to chat with. He will be missed in Port Washington.

My condolences to the De Feo family and especially to his sister, Marie, who was a classmate of mine. I know that you loved your brother dearly as many others did. He will be deeply missed by you and his other friends.
May God bless you and grant you the serenity and strength to accept this loss. I remember you and your family, and these thoughts are shared from Paul J. Dumpson and family.

Deepest condolences. Was a frequent weekend "geeker" at Sal's Ghost from my early 20's.... finally bought a Ducati 900SS brand new from him in '95, ridden to this very day. So sorry to hear of the loss of a motorcycling ICON.

Sal has been part of my life since I was thirteen. I am now 81. I worked and saved all my money to buy my first motorcycle. My Father drove me out to Ghost and Sal helped me with my very first motorcycle. He later told my wife, I paid with all single dollar bills. Has been an inspiration all these years. He was a very proud veteran of World War II. His love for motorcycle riding was contagious. It has always been exciting to go to Port Washington and visit with Sal. Every customer was a friend. His memory of everyone was amazing. Right to the very end he knew people who other had forgotten years before. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My wife and I extend our deepest sympathy all the family. Port Washington will not be the same without Sal. He will forever be in my mind and heart.

In memory of Sal - a kind, compassionate, family man and a true adventurer. I have fond memories of hanging out with my friend and Sal's son Sonny at the bike shop on Ohio Avenue when we were kids. Sal would always look at us with his smile that was remarkably both comforting and a clear warning not to do anything we shouldn't do in his shop. My deepest condolences to the DeFeo family and to my Aunt Marie and the entire Scaramucci family. Love, Mickey

My deepest sympathies to Sue, Sonny, Auggie and rest of the DeFeo and Scaramucci families. Sal was a wonderful, sweet man, an icon and Port Washington fixture, who I knew since I was a teen. He always watched out for everyone like he was everyone’s father. He was a true legend, not only known in Port Washington, but throughout the country! Especially, in the motorcycle world. I loved seeing him sitting outside his house on Main St., selling Ghost Tshirts, with visitors, even just a few weeks ago, and I’d stop by for a chat to reminisce. It never surprised me to see someone wearing a Ghost Motorcycles Tshirt on Long Island, but also in FL, New England and other parts of the US, I visited! People came from all over the country to visit the Ghost. My fondest memory - Sal sold me my first and favorite car, an old silver 1971 Mustang Mach 1 with a 351. I loved that car! I looked at that car for weeks everytime I passed Ghost, and wanted it so badly! Wish I still had it now! I loved to go look at his motorcycle shop, it was like a museum and so busy! I loved the way it smelled! He’d point me out some of his special vintage bikes, like the secret one - an old Indian - his friend, my Uncle Ronnie had back in the late 1930s-early 40s. Sal bet him to ride it through Beacon Movie Theatre on Main St. My Uncle took him up on it, and won the bet, riding his motorcycle into the Beacon and down the aisle! When I told my Mom, she laughed, and was surprised – she said they never knew he even had one, because he hid it in someone’s garage! lol! I’m sure Sal’s Ghost Motorcycles inspired Billy Joel to open his 20th Century Motorcycle shop in Oyster Bay, NY, as I remember seeing him stop by and visit Sal. On one occasion, Billy came by with model, Lauren Hutton on the back of his bike, if I remember correctly - a red Ducati, and he, Sal and Lauren ended up at La Motta’s at Manhasset Bay Marina in Manhasset Isle. Those were the days in idyllic Port Washington. Rest in Peace, Sal – You will be sorely missed, and never forgotten. Miss you. Jill Morrison

For more than 50 years, Sal DeFeo was my friend, motorcycle riding buddy, unofficial big brother, and resident “philosopher-in-chief”. He was smart, wise, clever, funny, and caring. He loved his family. He was loyal and true to his friends. He was rightly proud of his service to our country in World War II.
Sal rode his beloved motorcycles for over 70 years – right up until the very end of his amazing life. He passed on his passion for bikes and biking to countless people in the Port Washington community and far beyond. Through Ghost Motorcycles, his long-time business on Main Street, Sal became a legend among bikers and bike enthusiasts. He was an unforgettable character, truly one-of-a-kind.
Over these many years, Jeri and I could always count on Sal’s friendship. Our lives are greatly diminished by his passing. May he rest in eternal peace.
We send our deep condolences to everyone in Sal’s family.

I have so many treasured memories that I have collected over the years, but the one that always brings a smile to my face was the time when Sal came to my back door with a wooden crate that he had just taken off the back of his truck. He told me to go and get Robby. Robby was only two and a half years old at the time and he became very excited when he saw this wooden crate. I was probably the only one who had no clue what was inside. Yes, inside the crate was a small motorcycle! I had no idea that motorcycles this size even existed! Of course, Robby was thrilled! First thing he did was STAND up on the seat! I looked at Sal and said, “Dad, Robby doesn’t even know how to ride a bicycle yet!” He looked at me with a straight face and said, “All my kids rode motorcycles before they rode bicycles!” No wonder my boys, Robby and Jesse, called their Grandpa, Papa Cycles! The trail he left behind for all of us, is a trail so bright, so full of hope, inspiration, and heart. Thank you for the Swensen’s Ice Cream memories, the Junior’s Cheesecake memories, the boys’ rides in your sidecar memories, and for letting me plant flowers in between the motorcycles. Love always, Cory

My father rode his Harley from Elizabeth, NJ to Port Washington to visit my mother and meet her parents in the 1940’s. As he rode into town he met Sal who knew Helen Morgan and where she lived. Sal, on his bike, led Bob Vogt to Bar Beach Rd where my mother lived. Sal will be missed.

Heaven gained this angel. I am so heart broken to hear the loss of my great uncle Sal. He was such a great man to all and did anything for anyone. Uncle Sal poured his endless love and sprinkled his love whenever he went. A true hero, veteran, and legend of Port but most importantly, he zest for life and his bikes. Salvatore’s legacy will always be in my heart and our town. I will never forget all of our memories and rides for growing up!l and much more! He loved his family unconditionally and they did as well.! You will always be my guardian Angel and in my heart forever. I love you and miss you so much! Rest in eternal peace.
