I was so sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. Dan got me my first job at Lincoln Savings Bank in Bushwick in 1977. He was a mentor to me and helped guide my career for many years. He was a friend with a wildly quick wit and a tremendous business sense. I’ll always remember Dan coming home from work and shooting the breeze with us “kids” on Pete’s stoop. Along with many other brilliant moments, Dan also gave us his introduction of the flamboyantly dressed Vinny as, “my partner - Chuckles, the clown.” He will be sincerely missed. My thoughts and prayers to Lucille, Deena and Danny. Rest in Peace, Dan!

Dan was not only my cousin but my good friend. He was always so good to me and everyone else. He was a kind and gentle soul who cared for everybody. I remember him as a little boy when he and I and our mothers lived with our grandparents while our fathers were in the service. We had such good times then. He was like a brother to me then before I had a brother. We shared toys and games and played together. We always had a special connection. I will miss him terribly and pray that he is watching over all of us.

Dan Cunningham was my most important mentor and friend. We met at the Lincoln Savings Bank in 1974. Over the next decade and a half, I was regularly in awe of the depth of Dan’s understanding of the full implications of every project that he looked at. If pressed for an immediate answer, he could always give a polite “no” to the great and powerful. Given time to work with a borrower, Dan would often understand their situation better than they did themselves and his “Yes” always met their real needs as well as the Bank’s. As he explored new frontiers of financing, his incisive wisdom always amazed me. Every day with Dan was a learning experience.
His love for his family and his friends ran deep. I’ve never known a more loyal person. His commitment to the wider community was strong. And his faith ran deep also. He was tireless in his work with the Peter Minuit Post of the American Legion, St. Vincent’s Hall, and teaching at the New School.
After Lincoln, we worked together on a number of projects, including starting a brand-new bank. And when I went off to seminary we remained closely in touch throughout the years. The parishes and the diocese I’ve served have benefited greatly from the advice Dan’s given and the way he taught me to search for creative solutions which actually serve the real needs of all involved. And periodic contact with his wonderful family ahs always been a lasting joy.
Finally, these past of couple of years have been much lightened for a number of us by Dan’s wise, ironic, provocative gentle humor judiciously shared on the internet. A real ray of light in difficult times.
Dan will be deeply missed.
