Obituary of Angelo Gimondo
DR. ANGELO GIMONDO, LONGEST-SERVING SUPERINTENDENT FOR COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT 30, PASSED AWAY DECEMBER 10, 2021 AT THE AGE OF 87 AFTER ENDURING MANY YEARS OF PROGRESSIVE DEMENTIA.
BORN IN SIDERNO, REGGIO CALABRIA, ITALY HE MIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES AT THE AGE OF 16. HE SERVED TWO YEARS IN THE US ARMY MORSE CODE UNIT AND COMPLETED HIS UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDIES AT BROOKLYN COLLEGE, THE CITY UNIVERSITY GRADUATE CENTER, AND WALDEN UNIVERSITY.
HE STARTED HIS CAREER AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER AT MARINE PARK JR HIGH SCHOOL AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER BECAME AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT MARK TWAIN JR HIGH SCHOOL. SEVERAL YEARS AFTER HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE DIVISION OF EDUCATIONAL PLANNING IN THE OFFICE OF BILINGUAL EDUCATION WHERE HE WAS LATER PROMOTED TO DIRECTOR. SEVERAL YEARS AFTER HE WAS CHOSEN TO SERVE COMMUNITY DISTRICT 30. FIRST AS DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT FROM 1982-1987 AND LATER AS SUPERINTENDENT FROM 1987-2005. UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP A NUMBER OF INNOVATIVE INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS WERE INSTITUTED WHICH HAVE ENABLED STUDENTS TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS IN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
DR. GIMONDO IS THE AUTHOR OF "PRIMO LIBRO" A WIDELY USED ITALIAN LANGUAGE TEXTBOOK. HE ALSO COLLABORATED IN THE WRITING OF SEVERAL OTHER PUBLICATIONS. DR GIMONDO SERVED AS A LECTURER IN THE MODERN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT OF BROOKLYN COLLEGE, AS AN ADJUNCT PROFESSOR AT ST JOHN'S UNIVERSITY, PHOENIX UNIVERSITY, AND LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY. DR. GIMONDO HAS BEEN A MEMBER AND OFFICER OF MANY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. HE HAS BEEN AN OFFICER OF THE NYC ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY SUPERINTENDENTS AS WELL AS A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES OF THE NYS COUNCIL OF SUPERINTENDENTS. HE IS THE FOUNDER OF THE ITALIAN HERITAGE AND CULTURE MONTH WHERE HE SERVED AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ITALIAN AMERICAN COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION (IACE).
DR. GIMONDO HAS BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF SEVERAL PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS INCLUDING THE MEDALS OF CAVALIERE AND GRAND UFFICIALE BESTOWED UPON HIM BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ITALY FOR HIS DEDICATION TO THE FURTHERANCE OF ITALIAN CULTURE AND HERITAGE IN THE UNITED STATES.
DR. GIMONDO SPENT HIS FREE TIME AT HIS HOMES IN GREENWOOD LAKE, NY, AND HALLANDALE, FLORIDA WHERE HE ENJOYED SKIING, SAILING, SWIMMING, AND TENNIS. HE WAS AN AVID WORLD TRAVELER WITH A PASSION FOR THE OPERA.
DR. GIMONDO IS SURVIVED BY HIS LOVING WIFE OF 59 YEARS SONIA THEIR FOUR CHILDREN SONYA, VINCENT, RONALD AND HIS WIFE AMANDA, DINA AND HER HUSBAND MARK, AND HIS GRANDCHILDREN MORGAN, MADISON, MATTHEW, MICHAEL, RUBY, AND LILY. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY HIS ONLY SIBLING, HIS SISTER CLARA VARANO
