When I was about eight years old, my father took us to buy crates of grapes to make our annual family wine together. After days of crushing and compressing grapes, we had filled over 30 gallons of wine into big glass bottles. Before we went to bed, my dad put corks over all of the big bottles of wine. When he went up to bed, I went back into the garage to check on everything again (I was so proud of our work I was too excited to sleep). I noticed the corks on the bottles were loose. So, I thought my dad just forgot to push them in. Eager to help, I packed down all the corks as tight as I could. I vividly remember my determination to make it perfect. I went to bed a few minutes later and in the middle of the night we started to hear explosions. My mother got up and screamed for my dad to wake up. As soon as my father heard it, he knew exactly what happened (and exactly who was responsible). In hindsight, there was a quite brilliant assortment of Italian and English words expressed as he rushed down to the garage. It was probably around 3:30 AM, but I was set on helping my dad, so I got up to follow him down. When he saw me try to enter the garage he immediately commanded that I go back upstairs. I was confused but I reluctantly went back to bed. The next day I asked him what went wrong and if I did a good job. He was very frustrated, but just laughed and made a joke out of what a great job I did. We sat and had breakfast together and I received my first tutorial on fermentation. To this day, this still makes me laugh when I think about it, and it is one of my kid's favorite stories as well. We love and miss you Nonno!
