Obituary of Nicola Mele
Nicola Mele (Pa) was a man of few words, fewer complaints, and an unmistakably genuine heart. Born in Volturara Irpina (AV) Italy, Pa left his homeland as a young man voyaging to Argentina seeking opportunity. There, he transformed a foreign land into his adopted home, marrying, and bringing two daughters into the world. After years of hard work, sacrifice, and patience, he and his family moved to Port Washington in 1971 bidding his adopted home farewell. An immigrant for the second time in his life, Pa wasted no time laying roots in the community becoming a proud member of the local Italian-American enclave. He worked hard, proudly, and successfully, seeing his daughters through school and watching them begin their own families. Pa spent much of his later years tending to his beloved garden, watching the Italian news, becoming a neighborhood favorite on his evening strolls, and enjoying a glass (or two) of wine at dinner without fail. He also spent plenty of time with his pet dog and best friend Cesare, who he shared an unfailing bond and love with. Pa was a role model for us, a man who lived life simply but proudly. His half-smile of approval could light up any room and bring comfort on the best and worst of days. A man whose only complaint on a 95-degree day might be there aren’t enough peaches in his wine. Pa leaves behind his wife Amelia, daughters Susana and Elsie, and grandchildren Cristina, Bryan, Lily, and Johnluca. Rest In Peace, Nonno.
