Dr. Sperber was an incredible human being and doctor.
He made time for me on one of the most horrible days of my life. A friend took me to see him, and it made a huge difference in my future. I will never, ever forget him and how he helped me through that time and going forward. I can’t imagine a better person, doctor, or friend. It was my good fortune to meet and share my stories with Dr. Sperber. An amazing person who I will always remember.

I knew Jacob as an undergraduate at the University of California Berkeley. He was always wonderful to be with, intelligent, warm, entertaining, and thoughtful. We stayed in touch from time to time over the years. Our paths diverged but ran parallel in many ways. We both ultimately became psychiatrists. While we both had family in California, he ultimately settled in New York, and I settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan. From time to time, we discussed cases and life and had the opportunity to see each other when I came to New York to visit or attended psychoanalytic meetings. He loved Chinese food and introduced me to Szechuan cuisine.
I hoped to visit with him in February 2023 when I plan to be in New York, but very sadly, it is not to be.

I feel so fortunate to have been Jacob Sperber’s colleague and his friend. His was one of the keenest minds I have ever known, and his heart was as huge as his intellect. Jacob and I shared quite a few patients over the years, and I have heard firsthand how deeply he touched their lives, how much they felt his care for them. I myself have appreciated Jacob’s guidance, wisdom and support as well as his singular sense o humor. On behalf of Stuart and I, our deepest condolences to his wife Linda and the Sperber family. Jacob, your passing has left so many with a heavy heart. This world is a better place for having had you in it. Much love, Laura.

Jacob and I were part of a peer group of psychoanalysts and creative arts therapists for many years. In a short time, we became dear friends. Jacob's intellect and wisdom was astonishing. More than that, it was his humility, gentleness, kindness and generosity that drew me closer to him and led me to love Jacob. After our peer group meetings Jacob would drive me home and we'd talk about our lives--the pain and the pleasure. What a blessing to ride in the car with Jacob and hope to get caught in traffic so we could be together longer. After Jacob's horrific accident, he made a remarkable recovery and we continued to find one another as long as we could. I hold Jacob deep inside. He is a light that never dies. Robert Landy

To The Sperber Family,
My deepest condolences. Words to express this loss would be an act of futility. He was a great teacher, mentor and person. My family, the community, and patients benefitted from his existence.

Dr. Sperber was one of the best mentors I have ever had. I was in awe of his ability to understand and empathize with his patients. He taught me more than anyone in my career. I will be forever grateful that he was willing to take a chance on my when many program directors weren’t. He forever changed the trajectory of my life.

Dear Jacob.
The world is seeded with your words, with your actions, with your love. You gave us a torch and we have been carrying it from the moment we met you and we will do that through all of our days to come. You are here in my heart, in the heart of many known and unknown to you. You gave us the foundation and the strength to carry on the fight for love, diversity and understanding. You build on us plurality, interconnection and reciprocity. You are not anywhere, but here within me, within us and you will always be. Jacob Sperber, the friend to his friend , the doctor to his patients, the teacher to his students and residents, the father to his child, the husband to his wife is here with us, within us and we will make sure that his work continues, that his love will be shared and his memory will be sacred to our soul.

My husband and I extend our deepest sympathies to you and the family. It is quite hard to find the right words. I hope in the days to come you find peace. I send love and light to you and feel blessed to have had him as my program director. Dr. Sperber single-handedly changed the trajectory of my life and for that I am forever grateful. He encouraged me to strive for more, be more and was incredibly selfless in sharing wisdom and knowledge. He reminded me to play my sitar when not on duty and the importance of infusing music into daily life. He is loved and remembered fondly. Again, we extend our condolences.

I would like to share my memory of Dr. Sperber, who was my mentor in the psychiatric residency.
He was full of life, enthusiasm for teaching, and helping human beings in need. Dr.Sperber taught me utmost respect and reverence for an encounter with a patient, modeled generosity of spirit, and the will to heal.
He was an outstanding clinician, and a great teacher, a role model, yet very approachable, and available to the trainees. His door was open for an advise in professional and personal struggles that we encountered. I will always remember his warmth and humanity. My biggest condolences to his family.

I'm deeply saddened to hear about your loss. I'm aware of the futility of words at such a time, but the plethora of psychiatric professionals Dr. Sperber, my professor and mentor helped train share the poignancy of this enormous loss.
