Gary & Rosalie we’re neighbors of ours in Island Park. You couldn’t ask for better neighbors. They were kind, generous and always willing to help. We know Gary is in a better place now and only wish the best for Rosalie and family.

Gary and I worked together at Barnard College for many years. A dear colleague who was hardworking, supportive and friendly and who loved his family and country.

My Brother, Gary
We were a very close family of four boys, Gary was the second oldest.
We grew up in a small apartment in The Bronx where we all sleep in the same bedroom, we all went to St Helena’s grammar school at the same time, we all went St Helena’s High School, we all went to different New York based Catholic colleges (Manhattan, Fordham (Gary), St. Francis and St John’s) and the three oldest brothers (Gary) served in the US Marine Corps. During his formative years, Gary was also a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout.
Gary was the quietest of the four boys. He wasn’t shy or bashful but rather he was the most thoughtful, the most introspective. His think-first, talk -later personality was helpful when was he appointed the Scout Master of the local Cub Scout group. And, he was elected to two prestigious school boards in Hawthorn New York and Garden City, Long Island not because he was good looking, although he was, but rather by his convincing oratory. In his spare time, he served as an effective, long term member of the Condo Board when he lived in Island Park, NY. “Quietly efficient” is an accurate description.
Academically, Gary was the highest achiever of the Smith boys. His success at Fordham University was followed by his earning a CPA license which was followed his earning a Master’ Degree from Adelphi University. Since the three oldest Smith boys attended college and studied business at the same time and since the threesome frequently studied together in the aforementioned crowded bedroom in The Bronx, Gary served as our go-to answer man. It went like this:
Brothers: “Gary, why do interest rates fluctuate?
Gary, after a thoughtful pause: “Because banks make more money when interest rates fluctuate”
Brothers: “Thanks, good answer, …. how do you spell fluctuate?”
In a few words, that is how I remember Gary: quiet, smart and someone who provides his talents to others. That is almost the perfect brother, but wait, there is even more.
As expected, a quiet, smart and a willing provider like Gary was likely to attract the best -of -the-best and the smartest- of- the-smart soulmates. That is exactly what happened. I can’t recall exactly when and how Ro and Gary met each other but I am sure that their meeting was embedded in God’s plan. Their 59+ years of marriage is a vivid testimony to that.
The beginning of Gary and Ro’s marriage was magical, their family growth years were exciting and adventurous and their final years provided the real test of the familiar wedding idiom “to have and behold until death do us apart”. In the best of times and in the worst of times Ro was with Gary. Bless you Ro for taking care of my brother.
We are obliged to remember Gary’s legacies: to think before we speak and to provide our many God given talents to others.
Thank you Gary.
Your loving brother,
Dave

I first met Gary and his lovely family in the early 80s when I was teaching music in the Franklin Square School District. His son, Gary Jr., was a talented member of my school band. I remember Gary Sr. as being a smart, decent, and friendly man with a gentle spirit. We lived on adjacent streets in Garden City South, almost directly behind each other. I'll never forget the time I was out in front of the house, and I saw this car driving toward me erratically, from one side of the street to the other. As the car got closer to me, it slowed and I saw the driver was Gary. He pulled up next to me and rolled down the window, at which point he told me the family cat had gotten out of the house. He asked if I had seen it, which I hadn't. You see, he was quite frantic and concerned for the cat's safety. That should give you a clue as to the nature of the man. I extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to his entire family. May God comfort you during this time of grief.
