Obituary of Alfreda Bazanowski
Alfreda Bazanowski, 93, passed away recently with her family at her side.
Alfreda was a proud native New Yorker, crediting New York City for the excellent education she received and her mother for exposing her to all the public art and culture the City provided. She began her career working for the Telephone Company where she gained many lifelong friends. While volunteering in support of Polish culture, she met her future husband Zygmunt. After a memorable evening dancing the night away at the Waldorf Astoria, they dated, courted and were married two years later. They bravely moved across the river to NJ where they enjoyed their newlywed years and eventually bought their family home.
Being a woman of faith, family, and service to others, Alfreda had a deep sense of gratitude and lived her life with kindness and compassion. The roles she cherished most were that of wife, mother, homemaker and grandmother. While raising her family, Alfreda was an active member of her church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found joy in worshiping and serving her community.
Alfreda was also a dedicated Brownie Troop Leader, participated in water aerobics, and engaged in creative crafting and baking. Being a prolific correspondent, she always took the time to send thoughtful letters and personalized cards to friends and loved ones. One of her most cherished relationships was with her English pen pal of 76 years, started during World War II.
Passionate about learning, Alfreda was always eager to expand her knowledge through reading, travel and conversation. Ten years ago she moved from her beloved family home in NJ to Long Island, NY. She truly embraced her new home by enjoying the waterfront, making new friends among her neighbors, the local senior center and the Port Washington Library, and cheering on her granddaughters whenever possible.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Zygmunt, Alfreda is survived by her loving daughters Anne and Christine, son-in-law Robert, brother Fred and sister-in-law Lolly. She is loving Grammy to Larissa and Sarina, Babci to Shay, Aunt to David (Esther), Amy (Paul) and Peter (Jill), Godmother to Loretta (Chris) and also leaves behind precious grand-nieces and nephews, cousins, loved ones, neighbors and friends.
In honor of Alfreda’s love for education, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the Port Washington Public Library Foundation, https://pwpl.org or Channel 13 PBS www.thirteen.org memorial gifts.
Alfreda’s kindness, wisdom, and generous spirit will be remembered and cherished by all those whose lives she touched
