Mrs. Notskas will be gratefully remembered for the incredible impact she had on my family. She changed my life when she facilitated the ability for me to do a summer research program in South Korea at KAIST - it allowed me to spend 6 weeks with an international group of students in Daejeon, South Korea. I learned so much, made phenomenal friends, and got to travel throughout Korea during the duration of the program thanks to facilitated activities (which also included Korean language classes)! It was such a special experience I have always treasured and am so thankful to Mrs. Notskas for making possible for me. She also paired me with a research opportunity at Columbia the summer prior, and throughout my time in high school, guided me with advice on college preparation. She was an instrumental part of my college application journey — I am so grateful for her mentorship during this time. And beyond all this, she also mentored my older sister on her college journey and paired her with research opportunities, including a summer program in Cyprus, which enabled myself and my family to visit Cyprus for the first time. She was a remarkable person, and remains an inspiration on how to lead a positive and influential life.

We'll miss you Mrs. Notskas! What a difference you've made in our lives. HSE lost one of its greatest mentors. High School East was good, but Mrs. Notskas made it outstanding. Mrs. Notskas, your office was like a little sanctuary in the middle of a giant, stressful, competitive public school. We were all stressed out by the standardized exams, academics...then came along your unique research programs which allowed some us to breathe by enabling us to think outside of the box. I'll never forget.. in HSE I had applied for a prestigious science research program in Michigan and had gotten rejected. I came to your office, upset - convinced I had missed my greatest opportunity in high school scientific research. Instead of consoling me, then turning me away (which is what any other teacher would have done) you looked at me and said "I can see the brightness in your eyes." Then, you did everything you could to lift me up by helping me and others find rare opportunities to do research at CING. That summer abroad unfolded as one of the most defining experiences in my teenage life - in my becoming an independent woman. My first time traveling abroad, without family - made possible by you. You took all of us - me, Lauren, Jason, Aashish, under your arms, as if we were your own children, and made sure we were comfortable, safe, and happy. You connected us with your amazing family in Cyprus, who took care of us, showed us around, fed us ( I will never forget being stuffed with moussaka), entertained us. Thank you, Mrs. Notskas, for a lifetime. Just a small example...you went many, many great lengths for your students. I'm so thankful we had kept in touch over email even after graduating. May you rest in peace and may your beautiful family take solace in the fact that you were extraordinary, adored, and will be remembered by us all.

I will fondly remember Mrs. Notskas as one of my favorite and most impactful teachers and mentors. As the director of the academic research program at Half Hollow Hills, she helped pair students with research programs and opportunities in their fields of interest. Thanks to her guidance, I had the privilege of attending two incredible summer programs during high school: the Ross Mathematics Program at Ohio State and the Research Science Institute at MIT. She believed in me, but more importantly than that, she cared about me. I remember her kindness and thoughtfulness most of all. Her birthday was a day after mine and a few days before my brother’s. She remembered and used to email us annually to say happy birthday and check in on how we were doing. I graduated high school in 2005 and received the last one of these emails in 2022. She continued to encourage me as I transitioned away from studying math/science, changed my college concentration to comparative religion, and went to seminary. She was an exceptional teacher, mentor, and person, and she will be sorely missed and gratefully remembered.

Someone recently asked me, “ Who was the teacher who inspired you to pursue your creative passion/area of work?” This was my reply: I've had many amazing teachers, and I'm grateful to each of them, but I should give a special shoutout to Chrysi Notskas, an amazing teacher from my school district who took it upon herself to mentor me. In 10th grade, Mrs. Notskas encouraged me to attend the Ross Mathematics Program where I learned about axioms, induction, and rigorous proof. In 11th grade, Mrs. Notskas encouraged me to apply to the Research Science Institute where I got my first taste of scientific research. In 12th grade, Mrs. Notskas encouraged me to participate in a variety of science fairs, where I learned how to present my work to the public. Looking back now, I see that these early experiences set me on a path to a career in academic research. Thank you Mrs. Notskas for being a caring mentor and a wonderful friend.
