Obituary of Rita Tanski

Rita Velten Tanski formerly of Port Washington, NY, passed peacefully on October 27, 2023 at the age of 94. Rita was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, John F. Tanski. She is survived by her children Ellen Bartley (Thomas), Anne VanGalder (Richard), and John H.(Carmen). Rita is also survived by her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Victoria, Katherine, Jacqueline, Rebecca, Emily, John Joseph, and Christopher Francis. Rita was additionally blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. Rita was a graduate of St. Agnes H.S., Pratt Institute, and Columbia University. She served as a registered dietician for fifty years working with private nursing homes, the Nassau Department of Senior Citizens Affairs, and Hospice Care of Long Island before retiring. An avid volunteer, Rita served the Port Washington community through the Port Washington Community Chest, PW/Manhasset League of Women Voters, Cow Neck Historical Society, and Friends of the Library. She supported her children through her many hours of volunteering with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the PTA. Rita was named co-recipient, beside her husband John, as Port Washington Citizens of the Year in 2002. Rita loved the community of Port Washington, where she lived for over fifty years. The family extends their deep gratitude to the Home Care Plus Community Healthcare and Hospice Program and the staff of Harbor Chase of Branford, Ct for their gentle care.

Visitation will be Thursday Nov. 2nd from 4-8 at Fairchild and Sons, 1570 Northern Blvd, Manhasset. A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church, 1321 Port Washington Blvd., Friday November 3 at 9:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Peter’s Parish St. Vincent DePaul Society, 1321 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington NY 11050.
