Obituary of Jane Q. Hone

Jane Q. Hone of Port Washington, NY passed away peacefully at her home on December 29, 2023 at age 91 after a life very well lived. Jane and her husband, Francis J. Hone, moved to Port Washington in 2009 after living for 50 years in Manhasset, where they raised their five children.

Jane Mary (Quigley) Hone was born on September 12, 1932 in Geneva, NY to Dr. Thomas Edward Quigley and Helen Howe (Moore) Quigley. Jane’s father was an ear, nose and throat doctor who, just three weeks before Jane was born, died as a result of an infection he received from a patient just a week earlier. Jane’s mother was active in the Geneva community and was the first woman to hold various positions there.

Jane grew up in Geneva, a small city on the northern tip of Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. In 1940, her mother had the foresight to build a cottage a few miles away on the shore of Seneca Lake so that her children could spend their summers together there along with a few other Geneva families who did the same. It gave Jane and her siblings wonderful childhood memories, and it served as a very special place to return to every summer to visit with friends and many relatives, something Jane loved to do. When a cottage next door became available in 1993, Jane and Frank bought it and, just recently, had it rebuilt for future generations to enjoy.

Jane was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School in Geneva and Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Newton, MA (now part of Boston College), where she majored in Social Sciences. After graduating college in 1955, Jane worked for the Catholic Charitable Bureau of Boston, helping with adoptions of newborn children. It was in Boston where, in 1956, Jane met her future husband, Frank, who was from Rochester and just beginning what would be a long and successful career as a patent lawyer in New York City.

Jane and Frank were married on June 22, 1957, in St. Stephen’s Church in Geneva, and initially lived in Forest Hills, Queens. In 1959, they moved to Manhasset, where they lived for 50 years and raised their five children, Frank, Margaret, Andy, Tom and Paul. Jane and Frank were active parishioners of St. Mary’s Parish and their children attended St. Mary’s Schools. In 2009, Jane and Frank moved to nearby Port Washington.

In addition to regularly attending daily Mass, after which she would often socialize with some of her friends, Jane was especially generous with her time and involvement in many St. Mary’s Parish organizations and activities, including the Rosary Society (president, 1975), Parent Teacher Council (first woman president, 1978), Elementary School Board, Parish School Board, Parish Council (first woman president, 1981-83), Eucharistic Minister, Parish Blood Drive, Stewardship Planning Committee, Renew 2000 Planning Committee, Ministry of Consolation, and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

Like her mother, Jane had a desire to serve others that extended to many civic involvements, including the Manhasset Youth Council (which she helped organize in 1980), Friends of the Manhasset Public Library (president, 1987), Manhasset Community Fund (president, 1986-87), Volunteer at St. Francis Hospital, Eucharistic Minister at North Shore Hospital, Manhasset Senior Advisory Council, Community Liaison Committee, Manhasset/Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council, Council of Greater Manhasset Civic Associations, and the Manhasset

Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer. For decades, Jane was also the Newton College Class of 1955 correspondent for alumni news.

Jane was recognized for her extraordinary volunteer efforts by, among others, the Chamber of Commerce (1992 “Woman of the Year”), Town of North Hempstead (one of the inaugural “Women of the Year” in 1994), Manhasset Community Fund, American Legion, Friends of the Manhasset Public Library, and Manhasset/Great Neck EOC.

A genuinely spiritual and social person who loved being part of a community, Jane enjoyed sitting and talking with people and patiently listening to what they had to say. She was very interested in keeping up with what her many extended family members were doing, whether by phone, email, or in person at small gatherings or large family reunions. To help keep track of the numerous birthdays, schools, jobs, spouses and various activities of her ever-growing clan, Jane created simple lists for her easy reference. And to many of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, Jane was someone in whom they could confide and from whom they could seek advice.

Jane lived a purposeful life, largely in service of others. Far more a giver than a taker, Jane will be very fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Jane is survived by her children: Frank (Christina) Hone of Raleigh, NC, Margaret (Lawrence) Bourguet of Manhasset, NY, Andy (Allison) Hone of Wellesley, MA, Tom (Dawn) Hone of Crestwood, NY, and Paul Hone of Port Washington, NY; ten grandchildren: Marissa (Steve) Shackleton, Brendan Hone, Thomas Bourguet (fiancee Natalia Aranguren), Elizabeth Bourguet (Nick Taran), Stephen Bourguet (Eileen Macron), Caroline Hone, Natalie Hone, Grace Hone, Aidan Quigley Hone (fiancee Rebecca Geddes) and Deirdre Hone; and two great-grandchildren: Adam Shackleton and Cora Jane Shackleton.

Jane was predeceased by her husband, Frank, and her beloved siblings, Daniel P. Quigley, Margaret Quigley, Helen (Quigley) Williams, and Thomas E. Quigley, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3pm-6pm at the funeral home.  Funeral Mass, Wednesday, 10:15am St. Mary's Church, Manhasset with interment to follow at Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
