Obituary of Mary Demou

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Demou, 101, peacefully passed away on Tuesday March 12, 2024 at her home with her family by her side.  Beloved wife of the late Christos, and is survived by her three loving children, Peter and his wife Yvonne, Kyriakos and his wife Debra and Beba and her husband Kostas; grandchildren, Christos, Anastasia and AlexisMarie; sister-in-law Catherine, cousins, neices and nephews and other relatives in the USA and Greece.

She was born on June 15, 1922 in Beidgeport, CT to Petros and Aglaia George.  At a young age she moved with her parents down to Washington Heights and grew up in that neighborhood during the depression years and World War II.  In 1948 she met Christos Demou at an event in New York City.  The were married in 1949.  In 1951 after the birth of their first son, Peter, they moved out of New York City to Laurelton, Queens.  While in Queens, they had two more children, Kyriakos and Beba and lived there until 1969.  In 1969, Mary and Christos and their children moved to Manhasset where she lived for 55 years.

Mary worked as a sales associate at Lord & Taylor and Doubleday for many years.  Over the years she was an active member at the Greek Orthodox Churches of St. Spyridon in Washington Heights, St. Demetrios in Jamaica, and Holy Ressurection in Brookville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Ressurection Building Fund.

May her memory be eternal.
