Carl was our neighbor in Great Neck for about 12 years. This was our first home & we really lucked out in the neighbor's department.
Carl had an infectious sense of humor & the most glorious garden we admired. Did I mention we had an annual tomato contest? We would plant ours by seed; Carl would buy young plants & plant them after Mother's Day. It was always a friendly competition.
My kiddos loved Carl and all the cookies that magically appeared. We also loved the fresh tomatoes Carl would often drop off. We loved hearing music from the backyard on any given spring, summer, or fall day and relishing the immense joy of Carl & Maria enjoying their slice of paradise. We also loved the stories Carl would tell.
Carl loved our kiddos + us.

My first cousins Rose and Carmelo were much older than me. Because of the age difference I didn’t know what it was like to hang out with cousins until I met my second cousins Linda and Nina. I was not happy when they moved to New Jersey but we managed to see each other now and then. Years later I remember when Carl and Marie came to our home in Woodside with their two toddler sons, Paul and Luke it was such a sweet visit. Every time I met up with Carl at family events he would wisecrack with me and referred to me as his little cousin which made me smile. I’m glad all my extended cousins and the rest of my family have reconnected over the years. I’m sure that made my cousin Carl very happy. Rest in peace big guy.

Memories of my Uncle Carl. As my mother's much younger brother, he has always been a fixture in my life. I was about 6 when he married Aunt Marie and 10 the summer that we stayed with my Aunt and Uncle while my mother was hospitalized with cancer. The young couple who had just purchased their home and who didn't have children yet, welcomed Linda and me into their home. I have many fond memories of that summer. Uncle Carl was an avid Star Trek fan and it was a big deal when it came on and we all gathered together to watch the show. Aunt Marie took us to picnics at the beach, something that was unusual for a kid from North Jersey. We were always treated kindly.
Though we lived in NJ, we saw my Aunt and Uncle fairly frequently, usually being invited for holiday family dinners. After my father moved to Florida and my sister moved away, they were the closest family members I had and I appreciated being included.. Of course each visit would include photos and stories of the places they had visited. There was also the occasional "thinking about you" phone call from my Uncle. Those were more frequent once they were retired.
After they purchased a snow bird residence in Florida, I was invited to visit and stay with them. After many offers, one year the timing worked and I was able to go. I was initially unsure, as it had been a long time since I bunked with them, but I had a great time being shown around Palm Beach and trying my hand at golf, which is much harder than it looks on TV.
After we moved to Long Island a few years ago and no longer had the Cross Bronx in the way, I was finally able to reciprocate the visits and always had a very nice time.
Rest well Uncle Carl. I will miss you.
