Obituary of Mary Nicholas

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Nicholas (nee McGovern) of College Point, NY, formerly of Glangevlin, Co. Cavan, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family on June 3, 2024.

Born on June 22, 1939 in Ireland, Mary, the oldest of seven children, was a sister to Phil, Pat, Benny, Jack, Nora, and Joe. She moved to New York in 1957 warmly greeted and supported by her Aunt Margaret Meehan and her family. She met the love of her life, Leo Nicholas; they married in 1961 and lived a wonderful life with their four daughters in College Point, Queens. Mary is the beloved mother of Patricia, Caroline (Scott), Lynn (Ed) and Tara (Mike); and cherished grandmother of John, Tara, Alexis, Edward, Patrick, Kyle, Kayla and Riley. She was affectionately called “Mimi” by many.

Mary (Mimi) was a beautiful, kind, and selfless woman who encouraged her children in all their educational, sporting and professional pursuits. She enjoyed supporting her husband and his passion for running, scoring road races with precision, and raising funds for youth sports in her community. She lovingly cared for all of her grandchildren, taking them to modeling, baseball, religion class, gymnastics, nursery school, and more. With her quiet strength and endless love, Mary was a positive influence on others without calling attention to herself.

Mary will be remembered forever for her kindness, generosity, wisdom, humility, care, and devotion to her family.

Visitation at The Fairchild Chapel, 1570 Northern Blvd., Manhasset on Thursday, June 6th, from 4 pm – 8 pm. Funeral Mass, is on Friday, June 7th, at 10:15 am, St. Mary's R.C. Church, Manhasset.
