Hi Janice,
It’s taken me a long time to write this. I didn’t want to believe it was true. I will forever cherish the memories of standing next to you at your easel, taking turns helping each other in moments of self doubt. You always managed to make others feel good about themselves no matter where you were at yourself. I was always blown away by your projects (which you stayed up all night working on)—the whimsy, attention to detail, & sense of fun. I wish you saw your projects the way all of us did! You were always ready to help. I was so touched whenever you brought in your latest creation for everyone to try. You were so proud and excited to share. I’ll miss bonding over our similar dreams of teaching art to kids. Your kind, open heart made you perfect for it.
One of my favorite things about you was your ability to add silliness and humor to any challenging situation. I keep thinking about how when we gathered at the end of a semester you handed out plush banana key chains. Giving each of us a sly smile, you said “because this semester was bananas”. It was just so silly and sweet.
As I try to wrap my head around this, I’ll just say, I hold you in my heart Janice. Your warmth, dedication to your art, and sense of humor are an inspiration. I’ll miss you <3 Kristy

There isn’t a single moment where I don’t think of you, Janice. I think about your smile and all the funny things you would say. I think about how blunt you were about your opinions and how easy it was for you to start a conversation with anyone. Everywhere I went with you, people knew the lovable person you were. We couldn’t go down the hallway without having 5 people say hi to you. I could never catch you without your iPad since you were always working so hard on an assignment. You were incredibly hard-working and always gave it your all. No matter how stressed out you were, you never failed to try and make others feel better. You were always so considerate of everyone around you and made it clear you cared about them. You were always so sweet to me and never failed to impress me with your Spanish. I’ll never forget the many times you would make me laugh and how much joy I got from spending time with you. Being with you since the beginning of college, filled with love and amazing memories will always stay with me. Watching you grow not just as an artist but as a person has been one of the most inspiring and rewarding things I could’ve asked for. I’ve never met anyone like you and I know I’m lucky to have you come into my life. You did so much for me Janice and I’ll never stop being grateful to you. I will always love you with all my heart Janice and I’ll never stop thinking of you.

It took me some time to find the right words to say. There are many words I would like to say to Janice, but most of all, I would like to thank her.
Janice, thank you for being such an amazing friend, peer and classmate. I admired how hard you worked and how much energy and thought you put into everything you did. You pushed yourself, and you never saw stress as a deterrent from taking that extra class, or learning a new skill. One thing, out of many that I’ve learned from you, is to “go for it”.
Thank you for giving me generous words of encouragement even when you were feeling just as anxious as me.
You made every space you were in feel like home. Class was so much more fun with our nostalgic conversations about animes we enjoyed watching as kids, or when you would bring snacks to share with our friends. Your visits to the Writing and Speaking Studio were so precious, and I am grateful for them, even when we were discussing the assignment we had half done for David’s class in half an hour.
I miss the times we would go out to eat, or when we would talk about the new desert you made, and when you came all the way from Great Neck to visit my house and walk my dogs with me up in Harlem. I know you are with us, though. I hope that wherever you are now, you get to try all of the delicious foods that you want, and that you still have that adventurous, pensive spirit about you. Rest well, Janice.

I was stunned to learn of Janice's passing, stunned and deeply saddened. She is one of those rare Students that I will always remember.
Janice had such warmth and an unforgettable energy that made her stand out and made her so memorable. She of course had plenty of talent and developed skill quickly. As others have already written, Janice was her own strongest critic and drove herself a bit crazy at times but she produced exceptional work. She was such a hard worker and very driven, so eager to learn and improve. Nearly every time I saw her she wanted to show me whatever new piece she was working on for critique and advice. And she was always extremely appreciative for the input.
Janice was lovely inside and out, caring and thoughtful. I noticed this in her interactions with her classmates. And I still remember the tasty pudding squares that she prepared herself and brought in to share with her fellow Students on our final class session of the semester.
I enjoyed all of my time with Janice. She always made me smile. Always.
Several have described her as a "bright light". She certainly was that, it is no exaggeration. Janice's light will be missed very much by everyone who knew her at FIT. I feel blessed to have known her.
My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences to her family.

She always strove to do her best and it was so inspiring seeing what she would create with her amazing talent. Janice was such a light. Almost everyone at the Writing and Speaking Studio knew her and was rooting for her, whatever she was working on. Janice was so energetic and motivated — at least one of our consultants felt she needed to help her not work TOO hard on everything. We will really miss her. To her family and close friends, I am so sorry for your momentous loss.

This is so heartbreaking, my condolences to Janice's family, I will miss her dearly.
It was always a pleasure to hear "Hey Professor" in the hall at FIT. Janice had been a student of mine, and would always come by to show me her current projects-she was so hard-working, and talented! Her personality was wonderful, and the 6th floor classrooms will never be the same. May God grant Janice the blessings of His safe-keeping, and my sincere and deep condolences for her family during this time.

It is heartbreaking to lose Janice, who was an amazing student and artist. Janice was always an energetic, curious, talented student who was not afraid of challenging herself and evolving. Her ability to grow was inspiring, as well as her kind spirit. Having been Janice's professor for one semester, I remember all the interesting questions she posed and the intricacies of the artistic ideas she contributed. A truly unique and original artist, she was an unforgettable presence in our community. My deepest condolences to her family. Rest in peace.

Three years ago I had Janice in my class. I remember her as that bubbly, energetic freshman student, always asking questions, so full of life. Last year when she was a junior illustration student, I saw that quality remained in place but it was hardened —surrounded by a battle weary casing.
She never lost her zest for life, even when she was exhausted from the demands of school and everyday life. At the peak of her stress she would tell me that she doesn’t know how she can keep up with all of these deadlines. Two days later she was her old self again.
“I went ice skating the other day”…”that’s my happy place because it makes me feel free!”
And that’s how I choose to remember Janice Ji. I still cannot believe that she is no longer with us. My deepest condolences to her family and friends for their loss.

I met Janice during my first semester at FIT and since then she has been a bright spot for me at school. She was always there to share snacks, laughs, stress and memories. Everyone who knew her knew how hard working and dedicated she was. She put her all into every single project, despite the overwhelming amount of work on her plate, that never stopped her from going all in. We didn’t have many classes together after that first semester but we remained in touch and I loved hearing about all her work and what she had going on every time I saw her in the halls. She was so encouraging and inspiring and I’ll never forget any of her kind words. She often described herself to me as an anxious and introverted person but time and time again she proved herself to be more outgoing and courageous than anyone else I knew. She will be greatly missed and my condolences go to her family, I hope they find some comfort in all the memories her friends and classmates are sharing here.

Janice is the most optimistic person I have ever met. She is the sunflower of the entire illustration department. She is a perfectionist who is particular about her family, food, and her own works. But none of these can compare to her love for her friends. Heaven, why did you rush to hand her over to the autumn wind? Earth, why did you rush to embrace her in your arms?

Janice was truly a walking ball of sunshine. She always had a positive energy like none other that never failed to make everyone smile. We all admired her; she was so one of the most hardworking and talented people out there who was simultaneously super kind, caring, and hilarious. From her B&W cat illustration to her thoughtful children’s book, I’m so lucky that I was able to be there to see her art journey and wish that I could have seen her progress even further. No matter the immense pressure she was under, she would never let that get in anyone’s way and always provided a comfortable space for us to talk to. I will never forget the delicious food she would make us and the extremely sweet messages she would send us with these cute cat images. I can’t thank her enough for making my college years so enjoyable and full of laughter. It breaks me that she left us too soon but her soul will live on forever. Janice, I love you so much and will miss you endlessly.

Janice, you were one of the best in our grade. You were a truly dedicated, hardworking, and resilient person. I've seen you grow as not just an illustrator, but a person over the span of several semesters. It's been an honor knowing you and being able to call you my friend. I always looked forward to having classes if we shared them. You'd comment about my productivity, and how you wish you had it, yet you were one of the most productive students I knew. Your skills in both traditional and digital were superb. There was nothing you couldn't tackle. You'll be dearly missed, and your family has my condolences. Rest peacefully, Janice.

It’s hard to imagine that she’s really gone. While we weren’t the closest of friends, I’ve known Janice since the first day of college. I still remember when we went out to eat that first day, and I took her to her first Taco Bell, as silly as it sounds. It’s gonna be hard to walk down FIT halls and no longer expect to see her. But there’s no way anyone will ever forget her. My condolences to the family, and may she rest in peace.

Janice, one of the only people I know who could bring joy to anyone around her. It still feels unreal but your kindness stays with us and we still feel it now and will forever. If anyone was going to make change after FIT it would be Janice. I’ve known Janice since starting at FIT and could always count on her to prevail even when stressed, working hard to do her best and she always did her best. Seeing you work always inspired me and pushed me to work hard. I remember how hard you worked on your book and still is one of my favorite books created by our class. Your passion for storytelling and teaching stays with me and everyone. My condolences to Janice’s family, we are all feeling for you. I knew she would make immense change in our upcoming year as the student senator for Illustration, you can always trust Janice to care and fight for you. Janice, as I knew her from FIT, was a one of a kind artist and person. She had a work ethic and humor that made every class I had with her special. I was the Jacob that got to annoy her at school when her brother Jacob couldn’t! There is no possibility that our graduating year at school, or the continuing of our creative careers, will be without the impact her spirit will leave on us all. Not only a loss for those of us who had the chance to know her personally, but for everyone as she had so many more creations and stories to entertain the world with. I share this portrait of her doing her fav thing.
