Dear Sam....I light a candle for you today to show that you are remembered! Although my son, Michael, did not know you in life, you were his 'roomie' at Fairchild. Two young and handsome men taken in their prime. God Bless you!

My husband and I and Miyuki would like to express our deepest condolences to your family. Sam was one of the purest and sweetest souls I have ever known. He was also a gifted performer and brilliant student. Although I have lost touch over the past few years, I did think of him and your family often. I will always value my memories of his smiling face and warm spirit.

Our heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this time of sorrow. A loss is always painful but the loss of a child is absolutely unthinkable. News of Sam's passing broke our heart. He was such a large part of Victorien's life and life at Portledge for everyone lucky enough to have known him. It was hard not to be inspired by his courage, joy and tenacity. The many memories of Sam are indelibly etched in our hearts from his many awards to his musical contributions shared at concerts. May God provide strength and comfort to you.

Sam's sass, and sarcasm were a highlight of every group reunion. Building gingerbread houses and having him criticize my technique, watching terrible old horror movies, summer nights sitting around the kitchen table playing cards against humanity loosing to you, you’d constantly bring us to tears laughing at your one liners and quick retorts. Every birthday card or secret Santa note I’d end with saying thank you for keeping my self-esteem and ego in check, but forgot to thank you for you incredible presence kindness and just happiness that I felt every single time we’d hang out for the last 17 years, regardless of how terrible everything seemed. In Texas Sam said his biggest fear was being forgotten not death or dying but when people forget him, but no one is ever going to forget you until all of us are dead. Every group hangout every visit home every Christmas and summer won’t be the same without you and I’m going to miss you so much. I love you.

Sam was president of the Middle School, and an inspiration to students and faculty alike. He was a leader in every sense of the word. Sam never complained or made excuses, he kept up with his work under the most challenging of circumstances. Sam was cheerful and witty, full of clever ideas and incredibly self-possessed. He was a scholar, a talented musician (physically very demanding for him) and a gifted thespian. Reading about his time at Tufts, how much Sam accomplished in his all-too brief life! We at Portledge deeply mourn his loss, as do so many others. Our thoughts are with his extraordinary family at this very difficult time.

Sam was one of my best friends throughout lower and high school at Portledge. He was always able to brighten even my darkest days. I'll never forget spending afternoons at his house filming our own movies and setting up performances for the rapt audience made up of parents and siblings. When I think of Sam, he is always laughing, and that is how I will remember him. I miss you buddy.

Sam was a student of mine in 9th grade, and a friend throughout. His courage gave me courage. I once told him, after hearing his incredible "This I Believe" speech that he was my hero. He still is.
This is the time to grieve, but reserve time to celebrate his life, even though it was too short. He never stopped living and he will remain with us all in spirit.
Much love to the Lobley family

Sam touched so many people here at Portledge with his quiet smile and loving countenance. Because this is what he exhumed, he made me stop and realize that life is what we make it, and how we choose to seize the day. I have been blessed in my own small way through Sam, he was a teacher to so many. Heaven has gained and we have gained because of the way Sam lived to teach us all how to appreciate and LIVE better.

"He who knows no hardships will know no hardihood. He who faces no calamity will need no courage. Mysterious though it is, the characteristics in human nature which we love best grow in a soil with a strong mixture of troubles." Harry Emerson Fosdick
Sam was an inspiration. His example of courage, perseverance and achievement, despite challenging circumstances, showed us just how amazing a person can be. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lobley family, whose support undergirded Sam. Our memory of Sam's life will continue to serve as motivation in how we can be better.

Sam's pursuit of a life enthusiastically lived and deeply felt will continue to be an example to us. He persevered with a lightness of spirit that reminds us of the gratitude with which we should approach everything we do and everyone we meet.
His sax may be quiet now, but his music will always play in our hearts.
Please accept our sincere condolences.
