I only heard the news tonight.

To dear Father Denniston’s family,
I am very sorry for your loss. Father Denniston gave so much to so many.
I am one of his parishioners that he gave so much to. I want to thank Father Denniston for how he changed my life. While I attended a baptism ceremony, Father Denniston’s words moved me to tears. As I sat weeping over his heartfelt words, I realized that I wanted and needed to return to the Church. I will be forever grateful to Father Denniston for helping me become a practicing Catholic again and therefore enriching my life. He was a joy. His homilies were inspiring and I loved his generosity of heart. He was an incredible priest who changed my life forever. I was even so blessed as to have Father Denniston baptize my son. I have Father Denniston to thank for these many blessings.
Rest In Peace beautiful Father Denniston

My love and prayers are with JJ’s dear family and friends up North. Down here we called him JJ and y’all called him Father John.
I met him in Mobile, Ala. in the month of September of 1966. And we are friends now for 55 years. At the time we were newly professed Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
My wife and I waited for a wedding date so JJ could marry us. He was ordained a priest in February 1979 and he flew down to New Orleans and married us on March 10, 1979. And he flew back in July of 1981 to baptize my 1st child. And we’ve had many wonderful visits on Long Island and in New Orleans over the years.
I miss him already so much-he was a great man and a great friend. He rarely talked about his work and I found out in the last 5 days how much he was loved by those he had the chance to influence. I will keep talking to him and hoping that I will learn to love as much as he did.

Fr. John Denniston was a candle in the darkness for me. During the short time that our paths crossed he restored my faith in Priesthood, introduced me to lifelong friends and helped me get work that enabled me to become independent. I thank God for his kindness and his generosity towards me during a very critical time in my life. Rest in Peace John.

To his family- his sermons were brought to life with anecdotes of times he spent with all of you at weddings, baptisms and holidays. He often mentioned the young ones and their simple questions that brought meaning to life. He wove family stories into his explanations of the gospel, always with a sense of humor and love for all of you. His passing is a loss to all, but his memory and the messages in his wonderful sermons will live on. He will light up Heaven with his stories of his family, friends and Fordham students.
May the Roads rise to meet him, May the Wind be at his back, May the Sun shine soft upon his face, May the Rains fall soft upon his fields, And until we meet again, May God hold him in the palm of his hand. (Irish Blessing)

Father D was my advisor at Fordham, and one of the two recommenders for me to law school. He was an example to me for how one should live life: jovial, keen, thoughtful, and caring in all the right proportions. He was one of the few people who provided me meaningful, yet joyous, comfort when I lost my mother. Although he is gone, his memory and his legacy remain.

We want to express our sorrow and sympathy to Father Denniston's family and friends. He was a lovable and kind person.
We will surely miss his presence; his wittiness and sense of humor. For years we enjoyed his sermons that always had a lesson, a thought and a laugh! Our children enjoyed listening to him on Sundays and we used to look for the day and time specially during summer weekends to hear that wonderful, strong voice he had. Your loss deeply saddens us; may our prayers guide his soul to our Heavenly Father. Sincere condolences!

Fr.John was someone I always wanted to sit next to- you knew there would be great laughs mixed with teachable moments in every story. I remember fighting with my sisters for the front seat in his convertible on our way to the beach, I remember the endless amount of change he would hand me Bc he wanted to read the newspaper in peace and quiet and most of all I remember how he made my entire family light up when he walked through the door.

Father Denniston was such an important part of our family during his time at St. Anne's while my father, Francis Ascher, was fighting a losing battle against cancer. I remember Father Denniston visiting with my Dad so often and having so many heartfelt & philosophical conversations that were so important to my father. It was no coincidence that Father Denniston was at the hospital the morning when he passed. Years later, my wife Joanne and I were truly blessed to have Father Denniston return to St Anne's to officiate our wedding. I always hoped to reconnect with Father Denniston, and we are so sorry to hear of his passing.

Father D was an incredible mentor, teacher and friend to me during my time at FCRH-- and one of the best human beings I've ever known. I looked forward to his Faith & Critical Reason course every week, and during his lectures he would share stories about some of the personal relationships he developed with students over his tenure (especially those that were in need of help and guidance). His approachability made me feel comfortable to come to him with my own struggles I was dealing with at the time, and I was embraced with open arms and a can-do spirit that got me through one of the most trying times of my life. He helped me navigate through a complex financial aid situation, introduced me to many people who were able to assist my cause, and acted as a guiding spirit throughout my entire time at Fordham. I will be forever grateful for his kindness, compassion, wisdom, and of course his unmistakable sense of humor and joy that he carried with him. I was heartbroken to learn of his passing, and my deepest condolences go out to his family-- he was a truly great man, an unforgettable teacher and a pillar of the Fordham community. He lived by values that we all can subscribe to, and I plan on carrying his wisdom with me wherever I go.

Here is a story I would like to share about my Uncle, Father John Denniston
About 20 years ago I had a conversation with one of my Uncle’s friends, Tom Hanley. I was telling him how lucky I was to have Uncle John help guide me, be there for advice, help with job prospects, etc. He let me finish and then told me, “He somehow manages to do that for so many” At first, I felt less ‘special’ and then I laughed and just was filled with pride! That was the day, as a young adult I started to recognize the impact my Uncle had on those who crossed paths with him. I was privileged to see how he lived his life and the difference he made all along the way!

I was heartbroken to hear of Father Denniston's passing earlier this week. Father Denniston played a big role in my early life. He and Sister Maureen McDade gave me the life changing opportunity to attend St. Patrick's School, along with my older siblings. I happen to be born with a disability, and when it came time for me to start going to school, my parents approached Father Denniston and Sister Maureen. Father Denniston had a heart of gold, and still to this day I am grateful for the opportunities that he gave me. Some of my greatest memories with Father Denniston is when he would say the 5:30 mass on Sunday. The ability he had to engage the young minds was unbelievable. I remember being saddened when his time at St. Pat's had come to an end, the year I was heading into 8th grade. He will be dearly missed by so many.

I first met Fr. Denniston when I joined the Theology Department in March 2003. Upon his request I was to call him "John". From that month forward we became good friends. His students loved him and affectionately called him Fr. D! I told him a few times that he not only taught the students about religious faiths but also gave them the tools that would help them through life’s journey, wherever it would take them. He was kind, humble and had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. Over the years he received many former student requests to marry them and or baptize their children. I am sure that he will never be forgotten by the many students he has taught. I had an uncle who was a priest and his motto was to "Care Deeply, Give Quietly and Teach Gently" and this quote without question, also applies to the way Fr. John Denniston lived his life. I will truly miss my dear friend "John". His counsel and friendship and sense of humor helped me through the years!
