Obituary of Reverend John J. Denniston

Please share a memory of Reverend John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Reverend John J. Denniston, 74, a respected priest, uncle, teacher and friend died on February 22, 2021 after a lengthy hospitalization following a tragic automobile accident in October.

Loving Uncle to Melissa Paladino (Jan), John Denniston, Erin Crosby (Daniel C.)

Great Granduncle to James Wallace, Joseph Wallace, Sophia Paladino, Ethan Paladino and Willian Crosby.

Father John was raised in Westbury, NY. He entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at an early age, always maintaining a special affection for the Order. Prior to entering the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, he was Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He was ordained in 1979 and served in many parishes—namely, St Mary’s in Manhasset, St. Anne’s in Garden City, Notre Dame in New Hyde Park and as pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington. Additionally, he assisted at St. Christopher’s in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Father Denniston was a professor at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and also taught at St. Joseph’s College in Brentwood, St. John’s University in Jamaica and lastly at Fordham University in the Bronx where he earned his PhD and authored a book. He was affectionately referred to by his students as “Father D.”

Father will always be remembered for his quick wit, his engaging homilies and infectious laugh. The world will be a less interesting place without him. He will be missed by many and remembered by all.
