Obituary of Marcello Mirante
Marcello Mirante
Simeri Crichi – Manhasset
January 5th 1962 –March 26th 2021
Our family is sad to announce the passing of Marcello, our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Born in Italy, he immigrated to America when he was just 3 years old. He grew up in Manhasset, starting at the Plandome Road School, before going to Shelter Rock School when it first opened. He continued his education at Manhasset High and then attended Stony Brook University to tackle a biology major. He continued his studies at the University of Rome where he studied medicine until he decided the medical field was not for him.
Rather, he learned his family trade and became a tailor following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. He eventually took over the business, Tony the Tailor, which has been part of the fabric of Manhasset. Through the years, his customers learned to love Marcello as much as they loved his father, and he reciprocated that love. He expanded the tailoring store by incorporating a successful dry-cleaning business.
Marcello later met and married Rowena and together they became the proud parents of Antonio, named after his father. He prided himself in his Calabrese background, and enjoyed traveling to Italy and particularly his hometown, Simeri Crichi. He never lost his love for his birthplace and travelled back whenever he could. He was happiest there, always surrounded by relatives and friends and the beautiful Ionian Sea. His love of the ocean translated to an obsession with tropical fish, fishing, scuba diving, and aquarium aquascaping.
We were blessed to have had him in our lives as we loved him dearly. We will miss him forever. He is preceded in his death by his beloved father, Antonio Mirante. His survivors include his Mother, Eris, his wife, Rowena, his son, Antonio, his sisters Rosanna Mirante Baker and Maria Mirante Hutton and their families.
He used to say that when he passed away, he would meet his dad and uncles and together they would play the Italian card game “briscola”. Here is to you, Mauch. We hope you have a great and winning card game and, of course, a brindisi on us. Cheers!
