I am deeply saddened by Prof. Theresa Rooney's sudden departure. She was my teacher and colleague. I work for York College IT. I sat in an English course many years ago taught by her. I will gratefully remember how effective teacher she was. She would always advocate for students no matter what their academic or ethnic or cultural backgrounds are. She was a great teacher and a friend. She would embrace everyone with a warm heart and helping hand. I remember how she would go out of her way to help the students in the Student Government of York College. She is a true educator and reformer who not only bring about changes in the society but also brings love and compassion. I will dearly miss her.
May God bring solace to the friends and family members she left behind.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Rooney. She was instrumental in and outside the classroom at York College. One place she left a lasting impact was at the Writing Center. When she became director of the Writing Center, she transformed it from a dark and unfamiliar space to a vibrant hub for students and tutors. Her tenure as director ended a few years ago, but her impact on the center outlasts the time she spent at its helm.
Dr. Rooney touched the lives of students and tutors who will always be grateful for the kindness she extended to them.
May she rest in eternal peace and your family be comforted by your memories of her—

To a Dear friend, Colleague and former Professor at York College,
It is with deep sorrow that I wish my condolence to the Family of Dr. Rooney. I remember receiving guidance from Dr. Rooney in writing which completely shifted the course of my academic performance in my writing courses and professional correspondences. Class was filled with a tension free environment without harsh criticism or judgments which allowed learning to occur naturally. I can truly say that you re-established belief in my capacity to write with the emphasis on reading newspapers and having open discourse throughout class and dissecting line by line what we read. I pray that my teaching approach draws from what I learned in your course and our interactions to help students find themselves and reestablish their confidence in the pursuit of education. I never truly had an opportunity to THANK YOU! I will always remember you and continue to reference students to ENG 270 with the hopes they meet a kind, non-judgmental and patient soul like yourself.
Respectfully your Student Always,
Bastien Jean-Baptiste

To The Family of Prof. Rooney ,
,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your dear Theresa whom I have known since my time at York College starting with my first stint in 1996 and then again with my second one in 2005. I hope that all the memories you created over a lifetime will serve as a soothing solace to you at this time.
She and I shared a discipline-- English-- and we shared some other common traits among them tenacity . We also shared a love of family and we both had big interesting ones that gave us lots of subject matter for banter during our encounters as we battled for our positions from opposite sides of the aisle. She and I were at once allies and rivals. It could be no less as she represented the faculty and I, the administration. Admittedly , we needed to represent our sides, but we always understood that in the final analysis ,it was the York College students who truly mattered.
A signal memory for me is the work we did in bringing to closure the three- year process of The York College Governance Plan that had not been revised for some forty or so years . Once the committee had completed its arduous and comprehensive three -year process with a very good and workable plan , it was left to Prof. Rooney, in her new role as Faculty Caucus, leader to negotiate some knotty elements of the proposal. I will never forget the long hours we spent in the York College President's Office writing , re-writing, negotiating, and re-negotiating the substance and the language. And when it was all said and done, we were able to muster the required two thirds vote from the York College Senate Plenary and take the new plan across the finish line and into implementation where it continues now to guide the College.. Tenacious and dogged; and ultimately fair!, She held my respect, indeed my affection for these and other traits.
May she rest in peace.

Theresa, Joe and I met due to our love of dogs and out of that that love came a beautiful friendship. She would stop by our house all the time just to let the dogs play in the backyard, Starbucks in hand. We would talk about her job, Japan, the dogs, the neighborhood kids etc and laugh till our stomachs ached. She was kind, sensitive, caring, fun, generous. This has been a very difficult time. She will truly be missed. Her dog, Keemi, the little love of her life, only 2 yrs old is settling in to her new home with us. She was loved very much by Theresa and now will get to live out her life with her doggy friend, now Sister, Zoey. We miss you bunches, T, with much love and many tears, we send off to His living arms. Eileen & Joe Bumbalo

Theresa wandered into our lives in Florida via her Dad, about 13 years ago. My son was 2. Theresa didn't give us much of a choice and grew into our hearts, sometimes like a tornado and others with her incredible kindness. She became an integral part of our family and we miss her terribly. She taught my kids to swim like pros. She helped Ronan get his Scuba certificate at 14 yrs old, and tutored him to get back on the honor roll. She took Maeve for treats I would never give her, helped with pick up and drop off for dance lessons, entertained them when I had unexpected appointments.
The past 14 months were tough for her and she fought hard to get healthy. Within these months we hit many goals and celebrated moments of great joy. Ronan spent hours per week with her, playing backgammon, eating all her food, and racing her around the corridors like the Daytona 500. She was his mentor and best buddy.
Theresa finally got her electric scooter in August. Ronan helped her set it up and came home. A few hours later I get a call. One of the administrators spotted Theresa, a mile down the road, scootering along on a busy road, gorgeous silver white hair flying in the wind. She was coming to see us and her little Maltase Keemi. As the very concerned administrator was relaying the "upsetting" event, I was covering the phone, smothering my laughter. Go Theresa!!! The next morning when I went to "speak" with her, the two of us almost burst a lung laughing. I love her, my children love her. We miss her.
