Obituary of William C Ryba

William Ryba, more affectionately known as Billy lived in Port Washington, New York. He died on April 19, 2023, doing what he loved most – serving others. Billy, who was born on April 16, 1970, was proud to be raised in Douglaston, New York. He is survived by his cherished wife and lifelong friend Tara Lipinsky and children whom he adored: Brendan, Avery, Bridie and Julian. He is also survived by his loving mother Rosalie, brother Christopher and sister Tricia and a gaggle of nieces and nephews, aunts and cousins who will miss him greatly.

Billy got his undergraduate degree from Queens College. However, he held a PHD in sarcasm, irreverence, and magnanimity.

Billy was proud to be an Officer of the New York City Department of Corrections for over 20 years. During his tenure, he recruited for the academy before landing his dream post overseeing the Ceremonial Unit, where he tenderly assisted officers’ families in bidding farewell to their loved ones. He was awarded several citations by The Department during his years on the job. While he took his role seriously, he was far from serious and his “brothers and sisters” were hard-pressed to keep a straight face in his presence.

Billy was a rabid Miami Dolphins, Rangers and Yankees fan (much to his October birthday, Mets Fan wife’s chagrin) and his home was often covered with Jerseys during playoff season. Including on his wedding night.

In retirement, when not working the catering beat making the lives of his much-loved clients easier, he was running a household; cooking, chauffeuring, vacuuming, and shopping at Home Goods or BJ’s - Speaking his “love language” of service to both family and friends. The taste of his chicken cutlets could bring tears to your eyes.

We can only dare to imagine what is happening in heaven right about now. There’s certainly a party replete with 80’s rap, disco, and glow sticks – and most importantly smiles and laughter of the loved ones who went before him. And, it’s definitely better organized.
