I have known Mrs. Albanese since I was 7 years old. I went to P.S.178 in Holliswood, Queens with Marlena, Lisa, Vincent and Valerie, but Marlena and I were in the same 1st grade class where we became dear and trusted friends to this day, as she is my second oldest friend. Mrs. Albanese and my mother Mary, were “class mothers” who accompanied us on school trips (and there were many!), where they spent hours talking and seeing eye-to-eye on the many topics that they cared about and shared. There was never a time that they didn’t have something in common to talk about, whether it was our education, social issues or “mom-stuff”. Our mothers really enjoyed those school years and after-school recreational times spent together. From what I saw as a child, the thing they had most in common, was their down-to-earth nature and the love and joy that we (their children) brought them, as mothers.
During my childhood years every so often I would go to the Albanese house to play with or attend one of Marlena’s super fun birthday parties and I always felt totally comfortable and able to just be myself around Mrs. Albanese. Like my mother– she was a “real Mom”. She embodied everything a mother should be the way she loved her children, was the “rock” of the family, had a gentle and kind nature and a warm and inviting smile. She treated me with the same warmth and motherly care that she gave her own children and I could talk to her and just be myself. The flow between being around her and being around my own mother was seamless, which isn’t something I could readily say about the mothers of my other friends! :-)
I was sorry when they moved, because for a time we lost touch. But as soon as Marlena and I were out of college as young adults and she was back in NYC, we reunited and although I didn’t get to see Mrs. Albanese as much, I always sent Christmas cards (some with a personal note) to her and Mr. Albanese so they would know that they were in my thoughts.
I absolutely loved the occasions that I went to visit the family in Northport because the Albanese sense of family was similar to mine. There was one time in particular that I enjoyed as an adult, where I got to sit on the beach with Mrs. Albanese and catch up (as it had been a lot of years!) and share a family meal with her and her family where there was intelligent and lively conversation and laughter.
My one regret is that I didn’t know until later years, that she was an accomplished artist! I too, am an artist and had I known, I would have loved to have talked to her about her work as well as attend her art shows. I wish I had gifted her one of my paintings. I will do so for Mr. Albanese in her memory.
It was always “comfy” being around Mrs. Albanese… and that smile! It could light up a room as brightly as the tropical sun shines!
With love and light,
Cheryl Green
