I have known Linda and Sam for nearly fifty-five years. Sam came to a party at my home with his Porsche 914. (True. He had a Porsche 914.) When he left, it would not start. Linda drove him home and they came back the next morning. I managed to get it started and Sam thought I walked on water after that. (I can't.) We were fast friends after that. We vacationed together--Peurto Rico, Barnegat Light--and our kids even have the same names. Janet and I will miss Sam. Sad to see an old friend gone. I am deeply saddened by the news of Sam's passing. I loved that man. It doesn't help that I am listening to Barber's Adagio for Strings as I write. Just a few minutes ago (was it years?), we were together for the holidays, jumping on giant pillows, playing video games, unwrapping gifts. I never questioned why I called you "Aunt" Linda, and "cousins" Alexis and Elena. You were and are family. Uncle Sam was my one true childhood hero - the adult I wanted to grow up to be like (I became a lawyer because of him and my brief summer job at COS). I see Sam in my mind right now -- behind the wheel of his BMW on a bright November day in 1987, driving me to “Aunt” Hildy's funeral. It brought me comfort then to be in his presence. I wish that I could be with you in person today to return that kindness. Let's get together again this holiday season. With love, Alex
