Obituary of June Chapman Wood

June Chapman Wood died March 18th at the age of 100. She lived at her home in Port Washington from 1951 until her death. Born June Gloria Chapman, the daughter of Leonard Ward Chapman and the former Katherine Kessler of Astoria, Queens, June was the first in her family to attend a 4-year college, graduating from Bucknell University. She interrupted graduate studies in history there toward the end of World War II to marry Lt. Robert Teas Wood, a naval flight instructor, and travel with him as he prepared for anticipated deployment in the expected invasion of Japan.

After the war ended, she worked as a superintendent of telephone operators for New York Telephone until the birth of her first son Robert Chapman Wood in 1949. After the family moved from Queens to Port Washington, a second son Thomas Huntington Wood was born in 1953.

June was deeply interested in the Port Washington Public Schools, and served as president of the Salem School Parent-Teacher Association. After her first son entered college, she began work as a substitute teacher. She was a popular teacher, and was known for her ability to create rapport with a wide variety of classes.

In addition to her two sons Robert (Louise) and Thomas (Linda), June is survived by grandchildren Elizabeth (Eesha), Michael (Claire), Ryan, and Stephen, as well as by great-grandson Max and by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be from the Fairchild Sons Funeral Home Manhasset (https://fairchildsons.com/ ). Viewing hours at the funeral home will be Monday, Apr. 1, from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral at St. Stephen's Church in Port Washington will be at 4:30 pm Tuesday, Apr. 2.
